{"id":44334,"date":"2021-10-08T15:45:01","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T15:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/10\/08\/estonia-buys-blue-spear-missiles-for-coastal-defense\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:41:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:41:17","slug":"estonia-buys-blue-spear-missiles-for-coastal-defense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/europe\/2021\/10\/08\/estonia-buys-blue-spear-missiles-for-coastal-defense\/","title":{"rendered":"Estonia buys Blue Spear missiles for coastal defense"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JERUSALEM \u2014 Estonia\u2019s military will receive the Blue Spear missile system to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2020\/10\/01\/estonia-moves-to-fortify-its-coastline-with-missiles-and-sea-mines\/\" target=\"_blank\">improve coastal defense<\/a> under a new contract signed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/asia-pacific\/2020\/07\/28\/singapore-israeli-firms-team-to-develop-new-ship-killing-missile\/\" target=\"_blank\">Proteus Advanced Systems, a joint venture<\/a> of Israel Aerospace Industries and ST Engineering Land Systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contract was made through the Estonian Centre for Defence Investment, a military procurement organization set up by the country\u2019s Defence Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proteus Advanced Systems\u2019 general manager, Ron Tryfus, said the deal is a result of a partnership established about two years ago to market the surface-to-surface missiles for coastal protection, either from land or sea, as a way to maximize each company\u2019s foothold in the sector. Development of the missile was announced in July 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis weapon system substantially improves our coastal defense and sends a clear message that we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2021\/10\/05\/estonia-eyes-artillery-missile-defense-drones-in-modernization-drive\/\" target=\"_blank\">contributing to the regional and collective defense effort<\/a>,\u201d Defence Minister Kalle Laanet said Wednesday. \u201cThis is one of the most complex and high-tech weapon systems of all time and a huge leap forward for the Estonian Defence Forces. I am very glad that Estonia has a defense industry capable of participating in such high-tech projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commander of the Estonian Navy, Juri Saska, said the weapon system \u201cwill form the cornerstone of Estonian naval defense for decades to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tryfus and the company would not provide a contract value or a delivery timeline, and ST Engineering would not comment on the deal. However, Tryfus did say the company faces a tight time schedule to meet Estonia\u2019s requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proteus will work with Estonian industry and subcontractors, and Tryfus expects to see more projects with the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proteus Advanced Systems describes Blue Spear as an advanced precision weapon that can operate in all weather conditions at a range of up to 290 kilometers.
