{"id":44414,"date":"2015-02-18T16:36:08","date_gmt":"2015-02-18T16:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2015\/02\/18\/blumenthal-only-specops-troops-for-is-war\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:37:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:37:07","slug":"blumenthal-only-specops-troops-for-is-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2015\/02\/18\/blumenthal-only-specops-troops-for-is-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Blumenthal: Only SpecOps Troops for IS War"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 A US Marine-turned-senator doubts America will deploy large numbers of ground forces to fight Islamic State militants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When lawmakers return next week from a Presidents Day recess, they are expected to begin work in earnest on a measure that would legally authorize US military operations against the violent Islamic organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Airland Ranking Member Richard Blumenthal, D-Ct., on Wednesday dismissed any notion that the US military is too worn out after over a decade of war to fight Islamic State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;As a member of the Armed Services Committee, what I&#8217;m hearing is this military is far from exhausted,&#8221; Blumenthal said on MSNBC&#8217;s &#8220;Morning Joe&#8221; program. &#8220;We have tremendous resources.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blumenthal called the US military &#8220;ready for this challenge.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, he said, under the Obama administration&#8217;s current strategy, only a small fraction of the military actually will participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not going to be the same challenge of massive numbers of US combat troops on the ground,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s going to the \u2026 special operations in these countries that provide intelligence, that protect American citizens, that enable the kinetic attacks and strikes, and that make sure we&#8217;re safe in the homeland.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/budget-policy\/congresswatch\/\">For the latest national security news from Capitol Hill, go to CongressWatch<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, the White House has ordered 2,600 American troops back to Iraq to fight the group.
