{"id":44452,"date":"2015-02-04T22:08:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-04T22:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2015\/02\/04\/gop-holds-fire-at-carter-hearing\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:40:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:40:43","slug":"gop-holds-fire-at-carter-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2015\/02\/04\/gop-holds-fire-at-carter-hearing\/","title":{"rendered":"GOP Holds Fire at Carter Hearing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 Republican senators held fire Wednesday, opting against using Ash<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ton<\/span> Carter&#8217;s defense secretary confirmation hearing to publicly hammer President Obama&#8217;s policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the run-up to the former deputy defense secretary&#8217;s appearance before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Republican senators and insiders predicted Obama&#8217;s national security and foreign policy decisions would be in the spotlight more <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">so<\/span> than the nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a very different scene played out for around five hours in the ornate Dirksen Office Building hearing room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>SASC member and <\/span><span style=\"background: #ffffff;\">National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman <\/span><span>Roger Wicker of Mississippi told reporters the difference in tone of Wednesday&#8217;s hearing from that of <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Carter&#8217;s <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">would-be<\/span> predecessor, <\/span> current Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was &#8220;night and day.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">during a break in the hearing<\/span> by CongressWatch during a break in the hearing why Republican SASC members were not asking Carter to explain Obama&#8217;s policies, Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, until last month the panel&#8217;s top GOP member,<\/span> replied: &#8220;Oh, do you think that&#8217;s fair?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>&#8220;Here&#8217;s a guy who really has the background and the knowledge,&#8221; said Inhofe, who until last month was the panel&#8217;s top GOP member. &#8220;And he&#8217;s going into the job and the first thing you ask him is how bad is \u2026 his situation and ask him to respond favorably to it. <\/span>I think people have so much respect for him as a person that they really didn&#8217;t want to do things [like] that.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were few partisan attacks on the White House, and only one minor dust-up with Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a potential 2016 GOP presidential candidate, pushed Carter hard on the administration&#8217;s Syria policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/budget-policy\/congresswatch\/\">For the latest national security news from Capitol Hill, go to CongressWatch<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the nominee&#8217;s answer failed to satisfy SASC Chairman John McCain, R-Ariz., he told Carter his reply didn&#8217;t come close to addressing Graham&#8217;s line of questioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He articulated goals, not policy,&#8221; McCain said, turning his ire at the president. &#8220;There is no policy. So I couldn&#8217;t expect him to articulate one.&#8221;<br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that exchange passed without any fireworks or discernible ill will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I told him he didn&#8217;t articulate a policy, but I didn&#8217;t see any reason to beat it,&#8221; McCain later told reporters. &#8220;I can&#8217;t expect him to give an answer because there isn&#8217;t one.
