{"id":44499,"date":"2018-06-13T14:36:30","date_gmt":"2018-06-13T14:36:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/06\/13\/raytheon-beats-out-northrop-to-provide-key-f-35-system\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:40:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:40:23","slug":"raytheon-beats-out-northrop-to-provide-key-f-35-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2018\/06\/13\/raytheon-beats-out-northrop-to-provide-key-f-35-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Raytheon snags F-35 system business previously held by Northrop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Raytheon will supply the F-35 joint strike fighter with a new distributed aperture system after the original manufacturer, Northrop Grumman, elected not to participate in a follow on competition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/04\/30\/lockheed-gets-14b-contract-for-f-35-sustainment\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Lockheed Martin<\/a> announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The distributed aperture system or DAS is one of the joint strike fighter\u2019s signature capabilities \u2014 fusing high-resolution videos from the jet\u2019s six infrared cameras inside the helmet of the pilot and allowing the operator to identify and track targets in both day and night. When news articles talk about how the F-35\u2019s helmet allows the pilot to see through the bottom of the aircraft onto the ground below, that functionality is enabled by the DAS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The F-35 DAS was originally supplied by Northrop in the form of its AN\/AAQ-37 system, but Raytheon will take over the production of the DAS starting with the 15th lot of F-35 aircraft, which will start to be delivered in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2018\/06\/01\/some-of-the-oldest-f-35s-on-the-globe-are-forced-to-sit-and-wait-for-upgrades\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/F-35-VMFAT-501-Flag-Bird-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marine Corps F-35s dogged by parts shortages<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It can take months for Marines to get the spare parts needed to repair the F-35B. But what is anyone doing about it?<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Northrop chose not to bid for future DAS production after deciding that it was no longer an attractive business opportunity, said Kathy Warden, the company\u2019s president and chief operating officer, in an April earnings call. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, Northrop spokesman Brian Humphreys elaborated, saying that the company \u201capplied the same disciplined approach we use when considering all business pursuits and concluded that it wasn\u2019t the right business deal for us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Northrop will continue to be part of the F-35 program in other ways, such as production of the APG-81 radar and sustaining the legacy DAS, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It appears the Raytheon system was able to make a strong showing based, in part, on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/03\/29\/air-force-aiming-to-lower-f-35-sustainment-costs-to-that-of-an-f-16\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">its affordability<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed projects that the new Raytheon DAS will cost $3 billion less than Northrop\u2019s over the lifetime of the program, with an estimated 45 percent reduction in the price per unit and a 50 percent cut to sustainment costs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will also provide five times the reliability and twice the performance, Lockheed stated in a news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe supply chain competition for the next generation F-35 Distributed Aperture System resulted in significant cost savings, reliability and performance improvements,\u201d Greg Ulmer, Lockheed Martin\u2019s vice president of the F-35 program, said in a statement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are aggressively pursuing cost reduction across the F-35 enterprise and this initiative is a clear demonstration of our unrelenting commitment to reduce costs and deliver transformational capabilities for the warfighter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lowering the hefty cost of sustaining the F-35 has been a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2018\/02\/01\/pentagon-cant-afford-the-sustainment-costs-on-f-35-lord-says\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> top priority for Pentagon acquisition leaders<\/a>, to include Ellen Lord, the undersecretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now, we can\u2019t afford the sustainment costs we have on the F-35.
