{"id":44576,"date":"2019-08-07T18:33:03","date_gmt":"2019-08-07T18:33:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/08\/07\/the-armys-indirect-fires-protection-system-is-getting-a-high-power-microwave\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:36:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:36:05","slug":"the-armys-indirect-fires-protection-system-is-getting-a-high-power-microwave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2019\/08\/07\/the-armys-indirect-fires-protection-system-is-getting-a-high-power-microwave\/","title":{"rendered":"Soon to come to the Army: A high-power microwave to take out drone swarms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HUNTSVILLE, Alabama \u2014 The U.S. Army plans to field a high-power microwave capability to destroy drone swarms as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/04\/25\/army-reworking-enduring-plans-for-indirect-fires-protection-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indirect Fires Protection Capability system<\/a> under development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2019\/03\/26\/army-transforming-rco-to-tackle-and-quickly-field-complex-tech\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office<\/a>, the service is looking to field the capability to a unit by 2024 with a demonstration planned in 2022, the RCCTO director said Aug. 7 at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RCCTO\u2019s job is to serve as a bridge between the science and technology community and the program executive offices, helping bring technology out of development and into soldiers\u2019 hands, first on a small scale and then a larger scale when passed off to program offices. The RCCTO is primarily focused on hypersonics and directed-energy weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/06\/05\/coming-soon-to-the-us-army-combat-capable-hypersonic-and-laser-weapons\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mehel.jpg_69c4dd.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Coming soon to the US Army: Combat-capable hypersonic and laser weapons<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army&#039;s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office has plans to deliver a battery of hypersonic weapons and a battery of directed-energy weapons to soldiers in short order.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Indirect Fires Protection Capability, or IFPC, system is being developed to counter rockets, artillery and mortars, as well as cruise missiles and unmanned aircraft systems; the means to do that would be through a system featuring multiple types of missiles and also a laser capability to neutralize threats. Adding lasers to the mix means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/11\/13\/israel-uses-patriot-missile-to-shoot-down-drone\/\" target=_blank>decreasing the number of expensive shots<\/a> that would be taken against inexpensive weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is working to initially field a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/05\/16\/dynetics-lockheed-team-beats-out-raytheon-to-build-100-kilowatt-laser-weapon\/\" target=_blank>100-kilowatt laser capability<\/a> on a Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles as part of the IFPC program, with a plan to demonstrate the capability in 2022 and then field prototypes to a unit. The RCCTO is also looking into fielding more powerful lasers for the IFPC mission \u2014 between 250 and 300 kilowatts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the service recognizes it might be easier to disrupt the flight of multiple drones at once rather than try to individually destroy each one with a laser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLasers can do things, but if you are a combatant commander, there is a toolbox of things you need to be successful on the battlespace,\u201d Thurgood said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just one tool but a series of tools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so the program is teaming with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/electronic-warfare\/2017\/12\/13\/making-sense-of-champ-the-silver-bullet-miracle-missile-that-isnt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Air Force\u2019s<\/a> to develop a high-power microwave capability, he said. The Air Force will perform the research and development work, and the Army will supply the funding to build prototypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to demonstrate a high-power microwave capability in 2022 and then field the capability to a small unit, much like what the RCCTO will do with the IFPC high-energy laser system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the laser and high-power microwave capability both work well in small units, then they will transition to programs of record within the IFPC program, Thurgood said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, the Army awarded a contract to Dynetics, who is partnered with Lockheed Martin and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2019\/05\/10\/rolls-royce-unveils-hybrid-power-system-for-laser-weapons\/\" target=_blank>Rolls-Royce<\/a>, to build the 100-kilowatt laser system for IFPC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is also rapidly fielding a 50-kilowatt laser on a Stryker combat vehicle. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/08\/01\/northrop-and-raytheon-to-compete-to-build-laser-weapon-for-short-range-air-defense\/\" target=_blank>Raytheon and Northrop Grumman <\/a>are competing to build the system, and the two lasers will be tested in FY21.
