Bernie Sanders and Republican leaders over unrelated, non-military issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sanders, I-Vt., and several other Democrats want an immediate vote on legislation to increase pandemic stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000. The House passed the measure Monday, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants to add other provisions to the proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/23\/trump-vetoes-defense-bill-but-congress-appears-poised-to-override-him\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20355081986930.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Trump vetoes defense bill, but Congress appears poised to override him<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The president waited until the last moment to issue his attempted block of the massive defense policy measure.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McConnell linked that plan to fast passage of the defense bill, but Sanders wants a straight chamber vote on the $2,000 proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis week on the Senate floor Mitch McConnell wants to vote to override Trump\u2019s veto of the $740 billion defense funding bill and then head home for the New Year,\u201d he said in a statement Monday evening. \u201cI\u2019m going to object until we get a vote on legislation to provide a $2,000 direct payment to the working class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet me be clear: If Senator McConnell doesn\u2019t agree to an up or down vote to provide the working people of our country a $2,000 direct payment, Congress will not be going home for New Year\u2019s Eve. Let\u2019s do our job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move upsets timing yet again for a final vote on the authorization bill, which has passed Congress for 59 consecutive years and has been pushed as must-pass legislation by Pentagon leaders and defense lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, the 4,500-plus-page defense authorization measure, which took nearly a year to craft, was approved by both the House and Senate with wide, bipartisan margins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Senate lawmakers\u2019 approval was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/11\/sen-rand-paul-delays-defense-bill-vote-over-troop-drawdowns\/\" target=_blank>delayed by several days when Sen. Rand Paul<\/a>, R-Ky., objected to provisions that require congressional notification before troops can be withdrawn from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And after passage, the measure was vetoed by President Donald Trump, who chastised lawmakers for not including his last-minute provision to remove legal protections for social media companies (often referred to as \u201cSection 230\u201d) and for including language that would require the renaming of military bases which honor Confederate leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, Trump again took to social media to complain about those issues, calling the bill \u201ca disgraceful act of cowardice and total submission by weak people to Big Tech\u201d and adding that the Senate \u201cshould not approve NDAA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on Monday, House lawmakers strongly rejected that veto, voting 322-87 with significant support from Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Senate is expected to also override the presidential move, when they eventually get to a vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That could slip into the new year. McConnell was expected to make procedural moves Wednesday to set up a final override vote sometime this weekend, before the new session of Congress begins on Jan. 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the latest delay is raising concerns about the possibility of the measure\u2019s defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday, Senate Armed Services Committee ranking member Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., said in a statement that the House veto override vote was \u201ca stinging rebuke of President Trump\u2019s irresponsible attempt to use our servicemen and women as political pawns\u201d and that the Senate needs to follow suit as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/12\/28\/new-in-2021-what-will-bidens-first-defense-budget-look-like\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20314636032153.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New in 2021: What will Biden\u2019s first defense budget look like?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">One area of the military budget that could see the biggest change is personnel numbers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, after Sanders\u2019 block, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jim Inhofe said that failure to finalize the authorization bill means \u201cmore than 200,000 military families will receive smaller paychecks in January, because special pays and bonuses for hazard pay are all a part of this bill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both House and Senate leaders have said in the event the annual authorization bill doesn\u2019t become law, they do not have a backup plan. New program starts would be delayed for months (or cancelled altogether) and numerous purchasing plans disrupted while lawmakers work to fix the
