{"id":45214,"date":"2021-05-13T20:14:20","date_gmt":"2021-05-13T20:14:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/05\/13\/tethered-drones-robot-vehicles-aid-soldiers-during-two-week-live-fire\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:38:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:38:18","slug":"tethered-drones-robot-vehicles-aid-soldiers-during-two-week-live-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/training-sim\/2021\/05\/13\/tethered-drones-robot-vehicles-aid-soldiers-during-two-week-live-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Tethered drones, robot vehicles aid soldiers during two-week live fire"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division recently ran the Robotic Combat Vehicle through two weeks of live-fire testing as the Army develops <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/07\/21\/soldiers-will-run-a-platoon-attack-of-robot-vehicles-from-a-bradley-in-a-test\/\" target=\"_blank\">robot battle buddies<\/a> to fight alongside its Next Generation Combat Vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldiers from Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, out of Fort Benning, Georgia did the live fire at Camp Grayling, Michigan, in late April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The platoon ran through a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/04\/25\/army-wants-robots-sensors-to-make-infantry-platoons-10-times-better\/\" target=\"_blank\">live fire events <\/a>on the \u201cProject Origin\u201d platform. The platform is a surrogate system that the Army is using as it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/08\/10\/armys-4th-id-runs-robot-wingmen-on-scouting-maneuvers\/\" target=\"_blank\">experiments while developing RCVs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2020\/12\/01\/these-soldiers-ran-a-robot-combat-vehicle-in-rifle-platoon-maneuvers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/soldiers-RCV.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">These soldiers ran a robot combat vehicle in rifle platoon maneuvers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army has worked the vehicle into tests with scout platoons and infantry.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers used a remote control from behind a berm and visual feeds from drones tethered to the platform to locate targets. They then used M249 Squad Automatic Weapons, M2 .50 caliber machine guns and Mk19 grenade launchers mounted on the vehicle to strike enemy vehicles with two or fewer corrections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those weapons were fired using a wireless fire control built by Kongsberg Defense &amp; Aerospace, according to a company statement. The company built the first fielded remotely-operated turret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe system worked very well. Cory Wallace, RCV team lead for the NGCV Cross-Functional Team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Users are also looking to use the tethered drones as radio retransmission nodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I can put up the UAS to re-transmit while keeping my soldiers undercover and gaining 360-degree situational awareness based on what the UAS is able to see, I\u2019ve greatly decreased the risk to my soldiers and increased the ability of our units to communicate with each other,\u201d Dyal said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army plans to build three versions of the RCV, a light, medium and heavy variant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The light variant could work as both an armed escort and gear mule for dismounted troops in both offensive and defensive scenarios. The medium could carry a heavier load and keep pace with other crewed combat vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A company-level assessment is planned for 2022, Army Times\u2019 sister publication, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2021\/03\/17\/us-army-prepping-robotic-combat-vehicles-for-big-test-with-soldiers-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\">Defense News<\/a>, reported in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four RCV-Light vehicles from QinetiQ North America and Pratt Miller team won the prototype contract last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RCV-Light is a diesel-electric hybrid with a gross vehicle weight of no more than 8,500 pounds and a maximum payload of no more than 7,000 pounds, boasting a top speed of about 40 mpg, according to Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army was scheduled to receive RCV-Medium prototypes in late April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RCV-Medium is also a diesel-electric hybrid with a gross vehicle weight of 25,000 lbs. The vehicle has a remotely operated 30 mm cannon and top speed of more than 25 mph.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A company-level assessment is planned for next
