{"id":45239,"date":"2018-04-03T19:26:45","date_gmt":"2018-04-03T19:26:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/03\/trump-says-its-time-to-leave-syria-votel-says-were-staying\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:43:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:43:32","slug":"trump-says-its-time-to-leave-syria-votel-says-were-staying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2018\/04\/03\/trump-says-its-time-to-leave-syria-votel-says-were-staying\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump says \u2018it\u2019s time\u2019 to leave Syria; Votel says we\u2019re staying"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At almost the exact same time that President Donald Trump said at the White House Tuesday that the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/03\/09\/us-airstrikes-drop-by-half-after-kurds-depart-anti-isis-fight\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\"> U.S. will soon be departing Syria<\/a>, his top commander for forces there said the U.S. is in for the long haul. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a speech before the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington the commander of U.S. Central Command, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/02\/27\/gen-votel-russia-is-both-arsonist-and-fireman-in-syria\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">Gen. Joseph Votel<\/a>, said that the next steps in Syria require \u201cstabilizing these areas, consolidating gains, getting people back into homes, [and] addressing long term issues of reconstruction.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course there is a military role in this,\u201d Votel said. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At almost the exact same time, however, Trump was discussing a different role for the military \u2014 to help secure the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/04\/03\/trump-says-military-will-guard-us-mexico-border\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">U.S.-Mexico border. <\/a>On Syria, Trump said it\u2019s almost time to go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs far as Syria is concerned, our primary mission in terms of that was getting rid of ISIS. We\u2019ve almost completed that task, and we\u2019ll be making a decision very quickly, in coordination with others in the area, as to what we\u2019ll do,\u201d Trump said in a joint press conference with Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis and Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump said the U.S. involvement in the Middle East has cost trillions of dollars that have not benefited the country. He suggested that Saudi Arabia should pay for continued operations there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have nothing, nothing except death and destruction,\u201d Trump said about the U.S. involvement not just in Syria, but broadly in the Middle East region. \u201cIt\u2019s a horrible thing. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo it\u2019s time. It\u2019s time,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe were very successful against ISIS. We\u2019ll be successful against anybody militarily. But sometimes it\u2019s time to come back home, and we\u2019re thinking about that very seriously,\u201d Trump said. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent weeks the U.S. military has focused on the north Syrian city of Manbij, where coalition partner Kurdish forces have come under attack by pro-regime and Turkish forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. forces have increased their presence there to act as an arbiter, but not without cost. On Friday Army Master Sgt. Jonathan J.
