The organization\u2019s soldiers, mostly from combat arms, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/2021\/10\/12\/new-formations-scenarios-take-shape-at-the-armys-maneuver-center\/\" target=\"_blank\">evaluate innovative technology <\/a>before the Army decides what to field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.benning.army.mil\/MCoE\/MCDID\/MBL\/\" target=\"_blank\">Deputy Director Chris Willis <\/a>and two of his staff members, Mark Winstead with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/03\/30\/8-mortars-in-90-seconds-and-loitering-munitions-army-showcases-tech-experiments\/\" target=\"_blank\">Expeditionary Warrior Experiment<\/a> and unmanned systems lead Keith Singleton, spoke with Army Times about the lab\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the Expeditionary Warrior Experiment in March, battle lab experts looked at systems that could deliver eight mortar rounds on target in 90 seconds; a soldier-worn power generator that can run off windshield wiper fluid; and a flying drone able to carry a 70-pound mannequin across about 2.5 miles in less than four minutes, among dozens of other tech offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winstead emphasized that casualty evacuation is an ongoing effort, and the experiments improve each year. These projects also don\u2019t linger in a holding pattern. A unit will take on additional testing once the lab identifies technology that will meet the Army\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of the drone cargo carry, for example, the 18th Airborne Corps has adopted the effort. A not-yet-identified Army Forces Command unit may take that drone \u2014 or one like it \u2014 to a combat training center rotation to experiment with it in the field, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the lab\u2019s staff members are seeing battlefield theories evaluated in real time in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo things really stick out that really reinforce what we have learned through experimentation,\u201d Willis said. \u201cOne is the proliferation of [unmanned aerial systems], small UAS, and the ability of friendly or enemy [forces] to bring fires from the Ukrainians onto the Russians, and vice versa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia has had a drone capability for years. But \u201cthe Ukrainians have really shown how you can take a small, cheap, commercial off-the-shelf technology and really be devastating with that capability,\u201d Willis added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lab has also spent years working on a U.S. Army program \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/04\/10\/these-two-army-bcts-will-be-the-first-to-put-robotic-vehicles-in-their-formations\/\" target=\"_blank\">Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport<\/a> \u2014 to reduce or remove much of the load on soldiers. (Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers with the 101st Airborne Division and 10th Mountain Division tested the vehicle, as have Marine units. But tabletop exercises earlier this year looked at how artificial intelligence could benefit the program and small unit tactical resupply, Singleton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another load-lightening piece of gear featured in recent experiments is the <a href=\"https:\/\/equipment.adsinc.com\/hendrick-motorsports-silent-tactical-energy-enhanced-dismount-steed\/ecomm-product-detail\/403007\/\" target=\"_blank\">Silent Tactical Energy Enhanced Dismount<\/a>, or STEED. It\u2019s essentially an electric military cart that can carry gear and casualties or perform other tasks that would normally require multiple soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">STEED can travel 15-30 miles on a single battery pack and carry up to 500 pounds, according to manufacturer Hendrick Motorsports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Singleton said the lab first saw STEED in its 2019 round of experiments.
