No deaths or injuries occurred due to the fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement emailed to Army Times, Army spokesperson Cynthia Smith attributed the issue to fuel leaks. She indicated that the service has \u201cidentified the root cause\u201d of the leaks and \u201cis implementing corrective measures to resolve this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engine manufacturer Honeywell International told Army Times in a statement that the leaks were due to faulty aftermarket O-rings that weren\u2019t produced by the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn full coordination with the U.S. Army, Honeywell helped discover that O-rings not meeting Honeywell design specifications had been installed in some T55 engines during routine and scheduled maintenance at an Army Depot,\u201d the statement said. \u201cIt is believed these suspect O-Rings have been identified and isolated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith\u2019s statement tried to downplay the scope of the problem, declaring that \u201csome aircraft may not require corrective measures and may soon return to normal flight operations.\u201d Army officials did not respond to questions from Army Times about the repair timeline or its potential impact on training and operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army spokesperson did not specify how many aircraft had caught fire and how many required corrective maintenance. According to the Wall Street Journal, service officials have identified at least 70 aircraft with the faulty part out of the Army\u2019s approximately 400 Chinooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While a joint team of Honeywell and Army engineers identified the engine problem, it\u2019s not clear when they realized they needed to look for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A July <a href=\"https:\/\/safety.army.mil\/Portals\/0\/Documents\/ON-DUTY\/AVIATION\/FLIGHTFAX\/Standard\/2022\/Flightfax_July_2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">aviation safety bulletin<\/a> published by the service\u2019s Combat Readiness Center highlighted an incident where a hovering Chinook had to land and use its fire suppression system to address \u201ca small active fire near the aft portion of the No. 2 engine.\u201d Army Times previously covered CRC officials\u2019 efforts and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2022\/06\/21\/inside-the-army-center-reconstructing-catastrophes-to-save-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\">process for reconstructing accidents<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smith added that the grounding was meant to \u201censure our aircraft remain safe and
