Russian grunts get new assault rifles, too."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the U.S. Marine Corps works to procure new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/03\/08\/congress-grills-marines-over-m27\/\" target=\"_blank\">Heckler &amp; Koch M27 rifles<\/a> for their infantry, Russian soldiers are taking on their own assault rifle acquisition process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed in January that it plans to field the AK-12 and AK-15 assault rifles for service, which shoot 5.45\u00d739 mm and 7.62\u00d739 mm cartridges, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;A decision has been made on the AK-12 and the AK-15. The submachine guns have been recommended as armament in the ground forces, the airborne force and [naval] infantry,&#8221; the Kalashnikov press office said in January, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/tass.com\/defense\/987424\" target=\"_blank\">TASS<\/a>, a Russian state-news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Russian military has had several false starts in announcing the acquisition of the new AK rifles, with retractions issued shortly after the initial celebratory announcements. AFP PHOTO \/ VASILY MAXIMOV via Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Kalashnikov variants were selected after undergoing trials throughout 2017, Kalashnikov Group CEO Alexei Krivoruchko told TASS. He added that the famed rifle manufacturer was ready to begin serial deliveries this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNew Kalashnikov rifles combine famous, battle-proven high reliability with modern ergonomics, increased hit probability and capabilities to effectively use all modern accessories, from red dot, night and IR sights to [under-barrel] grenade launchers, forward grips, lasers and flashlights, sound suppressors and more,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/kalashnikov.media\/en\/news\/4522000\" target=\"_blank\">Kalashnikov Group<\/a> said in a press statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AK-12 and AK-15 rifles share many of the same parts and assemblies, aside from the ammunition used. Compact versions of both rifles, designed for close quarters battle, are available for Russian special operations forces, \u201cor as personal defense weapons for heavy armament and vehicle crews,\u201d the press statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two weapons\u2019 specifications \u2014 converted from metric \u2014 include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Caliber: 5.45\u044539 (AK-12) or 7.62\u044539 (AK-15)<\/li><li>Length, overall: 34-37 inches<\/li><li>Length, shoulder stock folded: 27 inches<\/li><li>Barrel length: 16.33 inches<\/li><li>Weight, with empty magazine: 7.7 lbs<\/li><li>Rate of fire: 700 rounds\/min<\/li><li>Magazine capacity: 30 rounds<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new AK variants are part of the Russian military\u2019s \u201cRatnik\u201d program, which is trying to marriage future combat gear into one system for the country\u2019s infantry. Other gear pieces supposed to be upgraded include modernized body armor, a thermal and night vision optic attached to a helmet, new communications gear and specialized headphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While not all pieces of Ratnik are ready, parts have already been combat-tested in the ongoing Syrian Civil War, according to Dmitry Semizorov, the CEO of the Central Research Institute of Precision Machine-Making, a private company with significant state oversight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou all probably know that the Ratnik was used in Syria and I want to say that the combat gear proved its worth during combat operations,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/tass.com\/defense\/961517\">Semizorov <\/a>said at a defense industry event in Moscow last year. \u201cI want to assure you that none of the elements of the combat gear\u2019s protection was ever pierced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s interesting to note that before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.treasury.gov\/press-center\/press-releases\/Pages\/jl2572.aspx\">U.S. State Department sanctions<\/a> were introduced in July 2014 against a slew of Russian companies, the United States accounted for 90 percent of the Kalashnikov Group\u2019s civilian firearms exports, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-03-08\/this-florida-warehouse-is-producing-made-in-america-kalashnikovs\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company\u2019s American counterpart \u2014 Kalashnikov USA \u2014 reportedly still sells guns from one of its three dozen dealers across the United States.
