A member of the president&#039;s own party is leading such a charge.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with reporters traveling with him from Washington, Mattis was asked whether he thinks the Trump tariffs will hurt security ties with NATO partners, including Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now I don\u2019t see that,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I think it\u2019s still premature to call it a trade war.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said alliance discussions will at times be \u201crocky,\u201d but he said the Europeans and Canadians must understand that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2018\/05\/31\/us-defense-sector-braces-for-trump-tariff-fallout\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">the steel and aluminium tariffs<\/a> are about the Trump administration\u2019s push for trade that is \u201cfair and reciprocal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Union has called the tariffs protectionist and vowed to respond with countermeasures. He said the alliance is likely to endorse plans to establish two new NATO military commands as part of a push to counter Russian buildups. They also are expected to approve a plan to increase, by 2020, the number of allied air, ground and naval units that could be ready for combat within 30 days of being put on alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mattis said improving relations with Moscow remains a priority but is proving difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTry as we might, trying to make common cause with Russia has been exceedingly difficult,\u201d he said. He cited Russian interference in the American, as well as some European, elections, and its alleged violation of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, as well as its 2014 annexation of Crimea and incursions into eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this week\u2019s NATO meetings, Mattis also will be talking to his counterparts about the campaign against
