(John Locher\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major veterans organizations are calling on VA to explain under what circumstances VA doctors initiate discussion of hydroxychloroquine with veterans as a treatment option after an analysis of VA hospital data was published last week showing hundreds of veterans who took the drug saw no benefit for COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The analysis, done by independent researchers at two universities with VA approval, was not a rigorous experiment. Researchers analyzed medical records of 368 older male veterans hospitalized with confirmed coronavirus infection at VA medical centers who died or were discharged by April 11. The analysis was the largest look so far at hydroxychloroquine for COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 28% of veterans who were given hydroxychloroquine plus usual care died, versus 11% of those getting routine care alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy were veterans who were receiving treatment from a federal agency being treated with an unproven and speculative drug?\u201d asked Jeremy Butler, chief executive officer of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. \u201cAt what point did the VA know that the results were this dire and when did they act upon those results?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are concerned that VA still has not addressed any of these questions or provided any information about the issue of hydroxychloroquine\u2019s safety and the results they have seen from it,\u201d Butler added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terrence Hayes, a spokesman for Veterans of Foreign Wars, urged the VA to limit its use of the drug for COVID-19. \u201cIt still hasn\u2019t been proven if the drugs help or not for COVID-19,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/02\/25\/evidence-lacking-to-tie-malaria-drugs-to-long-term-health-issues-researchers-say\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/2002403.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Evidence lacking to tie malaria drugs to PTSD-like symptoms and other long-term health issues, researchers say<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A National Academy of Sciences panel has concluded there is not enough research to determine whether malaria preventives can cause permanent health problems.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VA has sent conflicting public messages on use of the drug. Last week, Wilkie took advocacy of the drug even further than Trump by claiming without evidence that it has been effective for young and middle-aged veterans in particular. In fact, there is no published evidence showing that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, as Trump promoted the drug, the VA placed two emergency orders for $208,000 worth of hydroxychloroquine for use at its hospitals. The department later said the bulk of that order was being used for its approved uses, such as treating lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drug has long been used to treat malaria and those ailments. A few, very small preliminary studies suggested it might help prevent the coronavirus from entering cells and possibly help patients clear the virus sooner. But the FDA said last week that they are investigating life-threatening side effects reported to poison control centers and other health
