lawmakers on Thursday voiced support for the White House\u2019s deployment of several thousand troops to Eastern Europe, even if they aren\u2019t sure just how long those personnel will be stationed there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers began leaving Fort Bragg, North Carolina, for Europe on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/2022\/02\/02\/biden-sending-more-troops-to-europe-amid-ukraine-tension\/\" target=\"_blank\">About 2,000 troops <\/a>from the 82nd Airborne Division and XVIII Airborne Corps based in Fort Bragg are headed to Germany and Poland, and about 1,000 more shifted to Romania from other European bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/02\/03\/on-the-ground-with-paratroopers-deploying-to-back-nato-amid-ukraine-crisis\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" Poland, as the 18th Airborne Corps moves a joint task force headquarters to Germany.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moves are designed to \u201censure the robust defense of our NATO allies\u201d as Russia amasses tens of thousands of troops along its border with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ukraine<\/a>, according to Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stressed that the moves are not permanent, but could not give an idea of how long the military personnel may be stationed there. \u201cWe will constantly evaluate the conditions there on the continent to determine how long they need to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/02\/03\/more-russian-forces-mass-near-border-but-still-not-ready-to-attack-ukraine\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" border, but still not ready to attack: Ukraine<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cThe likelihood of more substantive escalation on the Ukrainian boarders as for today is viewed as low,\u201d according to the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, members of Congress were briefed by top Defense and State Department officials on the latest intelligence on Russia\u2019s aggression towards Ukraine and the White House response so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several lawmakers said they were given no indication how long the deployments will last, but backed the show of force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that troop posture is wise, to reaffirm our commitment to our allies,\u201d said Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., whose state includes Fort Bragg. \u201cI think the total number will ebb and flow. We\u2019re looking at what Russia is doing to cause concern among our NATO allies, and the administration will act appropriately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Germany-based Stryker squadron of about 1,000 troops being deployed to Romania, and Airborne troops based at Fort Bragg will likely serve nine-month heel-to-toe rotations with other units, as U.S. troops did in the aftermath of Russia\u2019s annexation of Ukraine, according to Jim Townsend, who was deputy assistant secretary of defense for European and NATO policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOf course they\u2019ve got a base and homes and kids [in Vilseck], but I don\u2019t see them coming home anytime soon, unless there\u2019s some kind of diplomatic breakthrough,\u201d Townsend said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s not going to be a pulling back of the troops until there\u2019s something that justifies that feeling that the crisis is over, a deescalation. They won\u2019t be there forever, but what we did in 2014 is they\u2019ll be there for nine months. They\u2019ll rotate back and someone else will go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tillis said he expects the North Carolina-based soldiers to serve in some sort of rotation, although he said no decisions have been made yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another 8,500 troops have been put on alert for a possible quick deployment to the region, but because those troops are promised to NATO\u2019s quick reaction force, it would take all 30 NATO member countries to deploy them \u2014 an unlikely possibility, Townsend said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deployments announced Thursday are meant to add pressure on Moscow to take U.S. diplomatic efforts seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe they thought we were all talk and no action,\u201d Townsend said of Russian leaders. \u201cBut for whatever reason, the president thought he needed to crank up in a visual way [the message] that we would stand by our allies, that we\u2019re putting skin in the game, don\u2019t think we\u2019re bluffing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/02\/02\/biden-sending-more-troops-to-europe-amid-ukraine-tension\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/3123214.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Biden sending 2,000 more troops to Europe amid Ukraine tension<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The military moves come amid stalled talks with Russia over its military buildup at Ukraine\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House has repeatedly promised that troops would not be sent into Ukraine to confront an advancing Russian army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI hope we don\u2019t see our troops in any way having a confrontation with the Russians, because that would be disastrous,\u201d said Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense estimates as many as 136,000 Russian troops \u2014 including more than 115,000 ground forces \u2014 have been deployed near the border with Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In lieu of direct U.S. military involvement, a number of lawmakers have called for the White House to send weapons and other equipment to Kyiv. The administration has already sent about $200 million in military gear to Ukrainian forces, including anti-tank and anti-aircraft equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no way that the Ukrainian military, no matter how much equipment we send, can withstand a conventional assault [from Russia],\u201d said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and the Senate Intelligence Committee\u2019s ranking member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat they could do, however, is mount an irregular, long-term resistance that I think will be very, very costly and devastating to the Russians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with those moves, the Senate\u2019s No. 2 Democrat, Sen.
