{"id":47417,"date":"2020-01-13T04:00:20","date_gmt":"2020-01-13T04:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/01\/13\/this-week-in-congress-senate-impeachment-trial-coming-soon\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:51:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:51:07","slug":"this-week-in-congress-senate-impeachment-trial-coming-soon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2020\/01\/13\/this-week-in-congress-senate-impeachment-trial-coming-soon\/","title":{"rendered":"This week in Congress: Senate impeachment trial coming soon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The congressional armed services committees will hold their first hearings of 2020 this week, but those events are likely to be overshadowed by the House\u2019s delivery of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/12\/04\/esper-chided-in-trump-impeachment-report-for-failing-to-provide-documents\/\" target=\"_blank\">articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/01\/09\/in-a-rebuke-to-trump-house-dems-advance-measure-barring-war-with-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Speaker Nancy Pelosi<\/a> announced that procedural move will take place in the next few days, initiating a Senate trial into the charges that the president withheld foreign aid in an attempt to force a political favor from Ukrainian officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The impeachment trial is likely to disrupt a significant amount of regular Senate work for weeks, although defense leaders may not feel a significant impact. Much of the planned Senate Armed Services Committee work is scheduled for after the delivery of the president\u2019s fiscal 2021 budget request in early February. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, House officials will carry on with regular committee and legislative work as the Senate trial proceeds. The House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee has already held one hearing this year, and has a second set for Tuesday. The House Armed Services Committee will discuss national security strategy towards China in its first meeting of the year on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<strong>Tuesday, Jan. 14<\/strong><br>\r\n<br>\r\nHouse Veterans&#8217; Affairs \u2014 10 a.m. \u2014 Visitors Center H210 <br>\r\n<i>Veteran Housing Programs<\/i><br>\r\nHousing experts will testify on current programs to assist homeless veterans. <br>\r\n<br>\r\nHouse Foreign Affairs \u2014 10 a.m. \u2014 2172 Rayburn <br>\r\n<i>Iran <\/i><br>\r\nSecretary of State Mike Pompeo will testify before the committee on current administration actions towards Iran. <br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Wednesday, Jan. 15<\/strong><br>\r\n<br>\r\nHouse Homeland Security \u2014 10 a.m. \u2014 310 Cannon <br>\r\n<i>Iran<\/i><br>\r\nCommittee members will examine current administration actions towards Iran. <br>\r\n<br>\r\nHouse Armed Services \u2014 10 a.m. \u2014 2118 Rayburn <br>\r\n<i>China<\/i><br>\r\nOutside experts, including former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy, will testify on strategic threats posed by China.  <br>\r\n<br>\r\nHouse Foreign Affairs \u2014 10 a.m. \u2014 2172 Rayburn <br>\r\n<i>Afghanistan<\/i><br>\r\nThe special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction will testify on waste and inefficiency in U.S. projects to help rebuild that country. <br>\r\n<br>\r\nHouse Foreign Affairs \u2014 2 p.m. \u2014 2172 Rayburn <br>\r\n<i>Mexico<\/i><br>\r\nOutside experts will testify on local and international security issues in Mexico. <br>\r\n<br>\r\n<strong>Thursday, Jan. 16<\/strong><br>\r\n<br>\r\nSenate Armed Services \u2014 9:30 a.m. \u2014 G-50 Dirksen <br>\r\n<i>Nominations<\/i><br>\r\nThe committee will consider the nominations of James McPherson to be under secretary of the Army and Charles Williams to be assistant secretary of the Navy for installations.
