{"id":47473,"date":"2018-01-31T16:28:56","date_gmt":"2018-01-31T16:28:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/01\/31\/mattis-considers-cell-phone-ban-at-pentagon\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:46:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:46:24","slug":"mattis-considers-cell-phone-ban-at-pentagon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2018\/01\/31\/mattis-considers-cell-phone-ban-at-pentagon\/","title":{"rendered":"Mattis considers cellphone ban at Pentagon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is considering banning all cell phones and personal electronic devices such as FitBits from the Pentagon, defense officials confirmed Wednesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mattis had considered banning the devices before last weekend\u2019s revelation that data from smart phones and watches, such as FitBit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/01\/29\/dod-reviewing-stravas-global-heat-map\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">had been aggregated in a way<\/a> that revealed detailed location and personnel data on bases worldwide. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/01\/30\/gps-tracking-company-reviews-privacy-settings-amid-fitness-app-security-concerns\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\">The security incident<\/a> brought more attention to the review, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the weekend, GPS tracking app Strava released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/intel-geoint\/2018\/01\/28\/how-a-popular-running-app-could-jeopardize-military-secrets\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\">global heat map<\/a> from users\u2019 personal devices to produce an overlay of popular running paths.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mattis has directed the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence Joseph D. Kernan and the Pentagon\u2019s chief information officer to review current security policies concerning the devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cell phone use at the Pentagon will be part of the larger review to look at the vulnerabilities created by wearable technologies. (Andrew Harnik\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the devices are banned it could have a profound impact on the more than 22,000 civilians and service members who work at the Pentagon each day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the personnel at the Pentagon use mass transit, such as the area\u2019s subway system, to get to work and rely on the smart phones during their commutes. It was not immediately clear how DoD would be able to enforce a ban on the devices, including whether it would mean they would need to screen each employee on a daily basis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
