The U.S. had banned the regiment from using American weapons, citing the neo-Nazi ideology of some of its founders.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2024\/05\/30\/biden-partially-lifts-ban-on-ukraine-using-us-arms-in-russia-strikes\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP24109824055065-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Biden partially lifts ban on Ukraine using US arms in Russia strikes<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The move comes as Ukrainian officials have stepped up calls on the U.S. to allow its forces to defend itself against attacks originating from Russia.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current members of the Azov Brigade, which has been absorbed into Ukraine\u2019s National Guard as the 12th Special Forces Brigade, reject accusations of extremism and any ties with far-right movements. But the Kremlin has seized on the regiment\u2019s origins in its efforts to cast Russia\u2019s invasion as a battle against Nazi influence in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow took an \u201cextremely negative\u201d view of Washington\u2019s decision. He described Azov as an \u201cultranationalist armed formation\u201d and accused U.S. authorities of being \u201cready to flirt with neo-Nazis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. law prohibits providing equipment and training to foreign military units or individuals suspected of committing gross human rights violations. The State Department said in a statement that it found \u201cno evidence\u201d of such violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a new page in our unit\u2019s history,\u201d the Azov Brigade wrote in a statement on Instagram. \u201cAzov is becoming even more powerful, even more professional and even more dangerous for occupiers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cObtaining Western weapons and training from the United States will not only increase the combat ability of Azov, but most importantly, contribute to the preservation of the lives and the health of personnel,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Up until the State Department\u2019s decision, Azov was prohibited from sending fighters to Western military exercises or accessing weapons bought with American funds. Lifting the ban will likely bolster the brigade\u2019s fighting capacity at a difficult time during the war against Russia\u2019s invasion. Ukraine suffers from <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-conscription-law-a8ccc48e6c15276c5b5035288ed016ee\" target=\"_blank\">persistent ammunition and personnel shortages.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years before Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Human Rights Watch raised concerns about Azov, writing that credible allegations of egregious abuses had been made against its fighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moscow has repeatedly portrayed the Azov as a Nazi group and accused it of atrocities, but has publicly given little evidence of the allegations. In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-kyiv-weather-1ea97857904db4d34d43fd54c1a9baf4\" target=\"_blank\">Russia\u2019s top court officially designated Azov<\/a> a terrorist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brigade grew out of a group called the Azov Battalion, formed in 2014 as one of many volunteer regiments created to fight Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine. It quickly became a separate official unit under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and later a unit of the National Guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since its first commander left in October 2014, the brigade says on its website, it has been \u201ccleansing itself\u201d of undesirable elements. It wasn\u2019t possible to ascertain whether the brigade has accomplished that. It has, however, tried to recast its public image away from the controversy surrounding its ultranationalist origins to that of an effective and skillful fighting force, and has shunned connections with controversial figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Azov soldiers played a key part <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-government-and-politics-3c09560bc2e3a980572d8b3d414e7b65\" target=\"_blank\">in the defense of Mariupol<\/a>, holding out in a siege and low on ammunition for weeks at the southern port city\u2019s steel mill, despite devastating attacks from Russian forces in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are hailed as heroes in Ukraine, remembered for defense of the sprawling plant that became a symbol of Ukrainian tenacity in the war against Russia, and people take to the streets for weekly rallies calling for the release of <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-prisoners-trial-mariupol-azov-1aecb8fa05a60372c88199e0fe00311d\" target=\"_blank\">hundreds of Azov POWs who remain in Russian
