{"id":47962,"date":"2025-03-07T22:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-07T22:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/03\/07\/pentagon-investing-millions-in-battlefield-rapid-disease-detection\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:46:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:46:29","slug":"pentagon-investing-millions-in-battlefield-rapid-disease-detection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2025\/03\/07\/pentagon-investing-millions-in-battlefield-rapid-disease-detection\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon investing millions in battlefield rapid disease detection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/03\/06\/troops-booted-over-covid-vaccine-show-limited-interest-in-rejoining\/\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic paralyzed the world, the U.S. military was <a href=\"https:\/\/health.mil\/News\/Articles\/2021\/05\/01\/Medical-Evacuation-2021\" target=\"_blank\">forced to conduct hundreds of emergency medical evacuations<\/a> out of combat zones, pause critical training evolutions, and redirect vast amounts of medical and logistics resources toward fighting the mysterious and deadly disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, with COVID-related panic in the rearview, researchers are focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealth.jhu.edu\/2024\/what-is-disease-x\" target=\"_blank\">Pathogen X<\/a> \u2013 a hypothetical next pandemic-causing disease that might be mitigated or contained with better preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rapidly diagnosing and categorizing Pathogen X is one of the use cases officials at the Pentagon\u2019s Chemical and Biological Defense Program reportedly see for GeneCapture, a developmental technology that creators and funders say can diagnose infections and pathogen families within an hour for about $20 per test \u2014 compared with 72 hours and around $160 for more conventional broad-edged testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To date, the military has invested nearly $12 million to support the development of GeneCapture as a deployable diagnostic tool, with the bulk of that funding coming from the Chemical Biological Defense Program, or CBDP, and the Defense Health Agency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The development team, out of the HudsonAlpha Institute in Huntsville, Alabama, is also raising funds to begin clinical trials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, whose certification is a pre-requisite for any military fielding or deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retired Army Col. Dave Zimmerman, a 29-year medical officer who commanded the 65th Medical Brigade in Korea and served as a director at the Office of the Surgeon General, told Military Times he could have used the GeneCapture device in his younger years as a medevac pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHaving a capability on board for your flight medics, where we get a Nine Line [medevac request], we fly to a location, the medic gets out and starts assessing \u2014 the more tools the medic has, the better he\u2019s going to be able to treat the patient,\u201d said Zimmerman, who now acts as an independent advisor and consultant for GeneCapture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd there\u2019s been many instances in Afghanistan where we would fly and someone would be injured and have some kind of illness and we wouldn\u2019t be able to know until we got back to the hospital. \u2026 I\u2019ve been deployed six times, so I\u2019ve seen a lot of things in many different countries. (Courtesy of GeneCapture)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If GeneCapture sounds a little bit like Theranos, a blood-testing startup that made headlines and attracted supporters \u2014 including former defense secretary Jim Mattis \u2014 before imploding amid revelations of fraud and bad science, the team has heard it all before. When that scandal became public, according to GeneCapture CEO Peggy Sammon, the surrounding suspicion and cynicism had \u201ca bad ripple effect\u201d on all technology development in the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re so different from Theranos. They were trying to determine, fraudulently, what\u2019s the chemistry in a small sample of blood,\u201d she told Military Times. \u201cWe\u2019re saying, \u2018What living organism is colonizing your body? What\u2019s living in the sample?\u2019 We\u2019re totally different setups \u2026 and a comment I\u2019ve made to a lot of people is [that] you can\u2019t win eight [military technology development] contracts without showing actual data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials with the CBDP said they couldn\u2019t comment on the technology or their plans for it, but did confirm the office\u2019s involvement with GeneCapture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology that enables this novel medical capability is what the development team calls \u201cdirect RNA capture,\u201d which uses an array of probes within the diagnosis device to determine the unique genetic signature for each pathogen by the presence of its RNA, an identifying molecule for living organisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf that RNA is in the sample, it attaches and lights up, and that\u2019s how we know what it is,\u201d Sammon said, noting that conventional PCR disease testing requires a testing solution and depends on a reaction that takes time to develop to determine the presence of a specific pathogen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to GeneCapture materials, internal testing is ongoing for the diagnosis of urinary tract infections \u2014 an application the FDA has shown particular interest in \u2014 as well as bacterial and fungal wound infections; animal and plant toxins; and biothreats such as dengue fever, coronavirus, influenza, typhus, lassa fever and Pathogen X, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology\u2019s inventor, Dr. Krishnan Chittur, was motivated to find a better diagnosis method after his infant daughter was diagnosed with an infection and placed on antibiotics for three days while doctors waited for lab results to determine what exactly was making her sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sammon, who met Chittur in 2009 and has helped the team raise some $7 million in private funding in addition to government grants, said working with the military on its needs has helped to ruggedize the platform \u2014 they worked to develop a cartridge-reading device about the size of a toaster that does not require laptops, delicate pipettes or test tubes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve tried to look at this as, How can this be more rugged?\u201d she said. \u201cIf you get so focused on it, you come up with something that works. And I think others have not looked at it this way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zimmerman said he\u2019s currently working with GeneCapture to help coordinate a private test in Kansas City, where, though the military wouldn\u2019t be formally involved, soldiers would be able to \u201cput their hands on\u201d the prototype and provide feedback. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said he\u2019s particularly enthusiastic about the promise of GeneCapture for the yet-to-be-determined conflict of the future, which may involve new weapons and mystery threats and variables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen you go into \u2026 a war in the future, there\u2019s a lot of unknown, right? Because the enemy always gets a vote. And you never know how you\u2019re going to be attacked or what you\u2019re going to be exposed to,\u201d Zimmerman said. \u201cHaving the best and simplest equipment for your medical professionals to help diagnose what\u2019s wrong with the patients is critical. \u2026 I\u2019m all about giving the soldier the advantage when it comes to saving others\u2019
