{"id":49157,"date":"2026-08-05T14:37:54","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T14:37:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2026\/08\/05\/us-navy-saildrone-to-use-unmanned-systems-in-expanded-counternarcotics-role\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:27:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:27:21","slug":"us-navy-saildrone-to-use-unmanned-systems-in-expanded-counternarcotics-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/unmanned\/2026\/08\/05\/us-navy-saildrone-to-use-unmanned-systems-in-expanded-counternarcotics-role\/","title":{"rendered":"US Navy, Saildrone to use unmanned systems in expanded counternarcotics role"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the recent announcement that a Saildrone Voyager unmanned surface vehicle directly aided the U.S. Navy during a drug interdiction in the Caribbean that led to the seizure of more than $81 million worth of cocaine, the Navy has awarded the California-based company a $16.3 million task order to extend operations of the Voyager fleet in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saildrone.com\/news\/saildrone-voyager-helps-navy-seize-81-million-usd-cocaine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\">according to a recent release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extension is in line with the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to curb illicit narcotics flowing into the United States via alleged drug-carrying vessels in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2023, Saildrone\u2019s USVs have worked in coordination with the U.S. Navy, supporting the Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S) and U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command\/U.S. Navy Fourth Fleet, per the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe continuity of Saildrone\u2019s presence along the southern border for nearly three years demonstrates the strategic value we bring as the world\u2019s most experienced operators of unmanned surface vehicles,\u201d said Saildrone President VADM (ret.) John Mustin. \u201cOur unmatched ability to remain on station and on mission in critical regions for months at a time is why our fleet serves as a powerful deterrent to bad actors. We look forward to continuing to partner with the Navy in its mission to secure the country\u2019s maritime approaches and southern border.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 33-foot-long Voyager is designed for persistent surface and subsurface surveillance and can also conduct nearshore mapping missions and seafloor characterization, the release states. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Able to remain \u201con mission and on station\u201d for months at a time, the USVs are \u201cboth a deterrent and an alarm\u201d along the U.S.\u2019s expansive southern maritime border, according to the company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since September 2025, the U.S. military has conducted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/11\/06\/a-list-of-us-military-strikes-against-alleged-drug-carrying-vessels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/11\/06\/a-list-of-us-military-strikes-against-alleged-drug-carrying-vessels\/\">strikes against alleged drug-carrying vessels<\/a> in the Caribbean Sea and eastern Pacific Ocean in support of what the Pentagon has called continued counternarcotics efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of June 22, the Trump
