Frank M. \u201cMitch\u201d Bradley and the SEAL Team 6 he oversaw to kill everybody aboard the vessel and leave no survivors. The report said that an initial strike against the vessel on Sept. 2 left two survivors clinging to their vessel\u2019s wreckage, but that a second strike ordered afterward killed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/12\/01\/former-jags-say-hegseth-others-may-have-committed-war-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2025\/12\/01\/former-jags-say-hegseth-others-may-have-committed-war-crimes\/\"><u>Former JAGs<\/u><\/a> and senior lawmakers have said such actions would constitute war crimes, if the report is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not personally see survivors,\u201d Hegseth said. \u201cThe thing was on fire, it was exploded, in fire, in smoke, you can\u2019t see anything, you got digital \u2014 this is called the fog of war. This is what you in the press don\u2019t understand. You sit in your air-conditioned offices or up on Capitol Hill and you nitpick and you plant fake stories.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a Sept. 3 Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6378265636112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/video\/6378265636112\">interview<\/a>, Hegseth said he had watched the Sept. 2 strike live. It was the first strike against alleged drug-carrying vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific Ocean that the Trump administration has said are part of counternarcotics efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But speaking to reporters at the White House Cabinet meeting Tuesday,<b> <\/b>Hegseth said he had<b> <\/b>watched the first strike live and then left for his next meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was only a couple of hours later, Hegseth said, that he learned Bradley had made \u201cthe correct decision\u201d to sink the boat and eliminate the threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since The Washington Post broke its story, the White House and defense secretary have repeatedly used language placing the onus of responsibility for the follow-up strike on Bradley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-venezuela-hegseth-maduro-512c66b99b2a13e9d1a3ed2699e78228\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-venezuela-hegseth-maduro-512c66b99b2a13e9d1a3ed2699e78228\">said<\/a> Monday that Bradley had ordered the second strike and had acted \u201cwithin his authority and the law\u201d when he did so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAdmiral Mitch Bradley is an American hero, a true professional, and has my 100% support. I stand by him and the combat decisions he has made \u2014 on the September 2 mission and all others since,\u201d Hegseth <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PeteHegseth\/status\/1995643490152128919\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PeteHegseth\/status\/1995643490152128919\">wrote on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York Times published a conflicting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/01\/us\/hegseth-drug-boat-strike-order-venezuela.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/12\/01\/us\/hegseth-drug-boat-strike-order-venezuela.html\">report<\/a> that said Hegseth ordered a strike but not the killing of survivors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifically, the New York Times report said five officials the newspaper spoke with said Hegseth did not detail what should happen in the event of survivors and that the order he gave was not in response to any surveillance footage depicting survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday that he did not know about the second strike, but would not have wanted one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked again during the Cabinet meeting about the second strike, Trump said neither he nor Hegseth knew about the second strike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs far as the attack is concerned, I didn\u2019t, you know, I still haven\u2019t gotten a lot of information because I rely on Pete,\u201d Trump told reporters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey had a strike, I hear the gentleman that was in charge of that is extraordinary, extraordinary person \u2014 I\u2019ll let Pete speak about him \u2014 but Pete was satisfied.
