The overall value of the prototyping project, over the course of three phases, is $49 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the competitive second phase, the two defense firms will advance their designs and build electronic and communications intelligence sensors that are both more sensitive and capable of working at higher altitudes, ranges and speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arrangement is part of the Army\u2019s Multi-Domain Sensing System effort, a basket of technologies the service says will modernize its aerial intelligence-gathering and data-sharing capabilities. The upgrades are necessitated by the Army\u2019s transition to multi-domain operations \u2014 the ability to deter and defeat an enemy, with help from partners and allies, in any environment \u2014 and advanced technologies deployed by other world powers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/2022\/08\/17\/senators-look-past-europe-push-pentagon-jadc2-vision-for-indo-pacific\/\" target=\"_blank\">namely China and Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe MDSS HADES will be globally deployable and provide a multi-faceted sensing capability at higher altitudes and longer ranges, and with longer endurance than is currently available from the Army\u2019s enduring fleet,\u201d Dennis Teefy, project director for sensors-aerial intelligence at PEO IEW&amp;S, said in a statement. \u201cThe goal is to provide deep-sensing intelligence collection of indicators and warnings, electronic order of battle, and patterns of life for target development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/2022\/09\/09\/raytheon-unit-wins-583-million-contract-for-us-army-navigation-suite\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/190924-A-VE095-055.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Raytheon unit wins $583 million contract for US Army navigation<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">MAPS GEN II ensures troops understand where they are and where they&#039;re headed, even in environments where GPS signals are jammed.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the conclusion of the second phase, up to two vendors will be chosen to work their sensors into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/miltech\/2022\/06\/06\/us-army-closes-in-on-faster-jet-to-replace-guardrail-aircraft\/\" target=\"_blank\">contractor-owned, contractor-operated aircraft<\/a> for a year of flight testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To determine what HADES will ultimately look like, the Army is collecting feedback from a pair of demonstrator aircraft with similar mythological inspiration: ARTEMIS and ARES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ARTEMIS, or Aerial Reconnaissance and Targeting Exploitation Multi-Mission Intelligence System, is based on a Bombardier Challenger 650 jet and is flying in Europe. It has logged more than 2,000 hours, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/industry\/2021\/08\/27\/us-armys-recon-electronic-warfare-capable-aircraft-flies-for-the-first-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">Defense News previously reported<\/a>. ARES, or Airborne Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare System, is based on a Bombardier Global Express 6500 jet and is dispatched to the Pacific, recording more than 130 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The multi-domain sensing HADES venture is a partnership between Project Director Sensors-Aerial Intelligence at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland and Project Manager Fixed Wing at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFly, fix, fly is the concept. We\u2019re seeing what works, what doesn\u2019t work in that domain, coming back to the United States, fixing, changing, going back and forward,\u201d Ronald Rizzo, deputy project director for sensors-aerial intelligence, told reporters Aug. 30 <a
