WASHINGTON \u2014 The Army said it solved power problems that occurred during a live-fire exercise this year with some of the latest networking gear and older models of the Stryker combat vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soldiers with the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment over the summer tested a batch of communications tools meant for Strykers, known as Capability Set 23. One issue identified during the experimentation, conducted in Germany, was related to power consumption<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The older Strykers upon which soldiers relied were power constrained, limiting what could be done in the field. At the time, questions lingered: Was the newly fitted kit \u2014 the integrated tactical network \u2014 or the Stryker variant at the root of the problem?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Operational feedback helped the Army\u2019s Program Executive Office Command, Control and Communications-Tactical<\/a>, or PEO C3T, and others mitigate the concerns. Newer, upgraded Double V-Hull Strykers also offer greater amounts of power, which officials recognized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome of the feedback items they found were, [soldiers] <\/b>really liked the new networking kit, but they found that we had installed a lot of it on legacy vehicles because that\u2019s what they have. They haven\u2019t been issued the new vehicles. As a result, they were experiencing some power challenges when they weren\u2019t connected to generators,\u201d Matt Maier, a project manager at PEO C3T, told reporters in August during a demonstration in New Castle, Delaware. \u201cIn fairness to the unit, those systems, those vehicles, weren\u2019t designed for the extra network capability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The effort looped in Program Executive Office Ground Combat Systems, or PEO GCS, whose leader, Maj. Gen. Glenn Dean, described the Strykers employed during testing as \u201csome of the oldest\u201d in \u201cthe fleet.\u201d The executive office\u2019s portfolio includes Strykers and the Abrams tank<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe may find there might be some things that were put on that were significant power hogs,\u201d Dean said in a September interview, \u201cbut more than likely it\u2019s the first-gen Stryker space, weight and power as the limitations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
