James McConville, dub \u201cdeep sensing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key to the effort is a \u201cfamily\u201d of in-development situational awareness tools, Wormuth said this week at the McAleese and Associates defense conference in Washington, D.C. They include the Terrestrial Layer Systems, or TLS, that can provide soldiers with cyber and electronic warfare assistance; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/industry\/2022\/09\/14\/l3harris-raytheon-chosen-for-next-phase-of-army-aerial-intel-upgrades\/\" target=\"_blank\">High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System<\/a>, or HADES, an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance jet outfitted with advanced sensors; and the Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Node, or TITAN, meant to centralize and accelerate the collection, parsing and distribution of data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first operational imperative for the Army of 2030 is really to be able to see and sense farther and more persistently, at every level across the battlefield, than our enemies,\u201d Wormuth said. \u201cSo how are we going to do that? We\u2019ve got to be able to collect and analyze unprecedented quantities of raw data from many different sources.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/news\/2022\/09\/13\/how-the-army-is-tackling-these-six-goals-for-future-wars\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">How the Army is tackling these six goals for future wars<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army\u2019s fiscal year 2024 budget documents underline deep sensing as necessary to address challenges in the Indo-Pacific, home to some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/U.S.-Indo-Pacific-Strategy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the world\u2019s largest militaries<\/a> and nearly two-thirds of its economy. The documents also highlight plans to spend $191 million on HADES and $143 million on TITAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service in 2022 tapped Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics Mission Systems for work on the TLS variants and L3Harris Technologies and Raytheon Applied Signal Technology for HADES sensor development. The year prior, it turned to Palantir and Raytheon to flesh out TITAN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deals totaled tens of millions of dollars. The Program Executive Office for Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/electronic-warfare\/2022\/10\/09\/jam-spoof-and-spy-us-army-looks-to-energize-electronic-warfare\/\" target=\"_blank\">PEO IEW&amp;S<\/a>, had a hand in them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo improve our deep-sensing capabilities, we\u2019re investing in sensing technologies, data analytics and target recognition aids,\u201d Wormuth said Wednesday. The Army\u2019s latest budget proposal comes to $185.5 billion, about 5% more than its previous ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the U.S. prepares for potential conflict with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks\/2023\/01\/05\/china-developing-own-version-of-jadc2-to-counter-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">China and Russia<\/a> and moves away from smaller-scale counterinsurgency campaigns, defense officials are emphasizing the value of observation across vast distances as well as speedy decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The thinking may be best encapsulated by the Pentagon\u2019s Joint All-Domain Command and Control initiative, or JADC2, which envisions a seamlessly linked military, with information securely flowing to and from land, air, sea, space and cyberspace.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/battlefield-tech\/c2-comms-battlefield-tech\/2023\/02\/07\/army-sets-sights-on-2024-for-next-project-convergence\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/221011-A-RK348-0078.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army sets sights on 2024 for next Project Convergence<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The timeframe is later than usual; the Army has typically held the event in late fall.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each service has its own contribution to JADC2. The Army has Project Convergence, a weekslong crucible during which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/it-networks\/2022\/10\/21\/project-convergence-shows-jadc2-alignment-leaders-from-3-services-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">technologies and networking techniques<\/a> are tested under realistic scenarios. In 2022, the experiment folded in the Air Force and Navy as well as troops from the U.K. and Australia. Canada and New Zealand observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve really got an array of ISR capabilities that we want to knit together,\u201d McConville said at the McAleese conference. \u201cSome of that is on the joint side, some of that is with us. And that\u2019s where the whole sense of convergence comes in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201creal secret sauce,\u201d the chief of staff added, is the ability to quickly corral available data, make sense of it and forward it \u201cto the appropriate shooter or effects mechanisms.\u201d And that well-situated force <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/electronic-warfare\/2023\/03\/09\/us-must-revive-dominate-electronic-warfare-pentagon-cio-sherman-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">could be wielding keyboards<\/a>, jammers, rifles or something heftier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we\u2019re going to do long-range precision fires, you need to do long range-precision targeting,\u201d McConville said. \u201cIn order to do that, you have to have deep sensing.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re going to do long-range precision fires,&#8221; Army Gen.
