{"id":50077,"date":"2023-10-10T14:56:58","date_gmt":"2023-10-10T14:56:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/10\/10\/suppressed-gps-in-ukraine-fuels-development-of-us-army-navigation-tech\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:55:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:55:12","slug":"suppressed-gps-in-ukraine-fuels-development-of-us-army-navigation-tech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2023\/10\/10\/suppressed-gps-in-ukraine-fuels-development-of-us-army-navigation-tech\/","title":{"rendered":"Suppressed GPS in Ukraine fuels development of US Army navigation tech"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The suppression of GPS signals in Ukraine amid Russia\u2019s ongoing invasion is informing the development of next-generation U.S. Army navigation and targeting technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is investing in alternative sources of situational awareness \u2014 where troops are and where they are headed, for example \u2014 in anticipation of future fights and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/cyber\/2023\/09\/12\/china-russia-will-use-cyber-to-sow-chaos-if-war-starts-pentagon-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">digital interference at a massive scale<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jamming and spoofing seen in Eastern Europe provides an \u201cincredible learning environment,\u201d according to Michael Monteleone, the director of the Army\u2019s Assured Positioning, Navigation and Timing\/Space Cross-Functional Team. The U.S. considers Russia a top-tier national security hazard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can see real-world, potential-adversary capabilities, and then we can put that up and measure how we\u2019re doing on our side,\u201d Monteleone said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/interviews\/\" target=\"_blank\">an interview with Defense News<\/a>. \u201cUnderpinning everything we do, whether its a signal, a sensor, whatever it may be, is continuous experimentation in a realistic threat environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cross-functional team participates in the so-called PNT Assessment Experiment, which puts both emerging and established tech through the wringer. The experiment in 2020 looked at dozens of systems including Stryker combat vehicles and the M777 howitzer.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/electronic-warfare\/2023\/09\/14\/spectrum-warfare-wings-koslov-eyes-fast-retooling-for-wicked-threats\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7970526.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Spectrum Warfare Wing\u2019s Koslov eyes fast retooling for \u2018wicked threats\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cIf you think about trying to get data to fighters, to bombers, to weapons, to countermeasures, to all the things that we do, that\u2019s a good number.\u201d<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI talk about resiliency via diversity. That\u2019s one of the things that we can measure up and say: \u2018Hey, in these types of environments, one, are we experimenting correctly, and, if GPS isn\u2019t there, can we still operate? How long can we operate? And how confidently can we operate?\u2019 \u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/unmanned\/2022\/07\/22\/up-up-and-away-airbus-zephyr-drone-breaks-flight-record-high-above-arizona\/\" target=\"_blank\">Monteleone said<\/a>. \u201cWe need that human factor of what it\u2019s going to mean to the soldier on the ground to operate in an environment or to not have a weapon system work the way, perhaps, that they expected it to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army in recent months dedicated hundreds of millions of dollars to jam-resistant navigation gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service in late September inked a $318 million deal with BAE Systems for embeddable M-code GPS cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April, the Army tapped TRX Systems to produce second-generation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/industry\/2023\/04\/12\/trx-systems-wins-402-million-deal-for-jam-resistant-navigation-gear\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dismounted Assured Positioning, Navigation and Timing Systems<\/a>, which soldiers can carry in the field. That deal was worth $402 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAcross the board, GPS isn\u2019t the only game in town,\u201d Monteleone said. \u201cYou have to have other
