An inaugural STEM day is also planned, during which children and young families can learn about tinkering and piloting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exposure to science, technology, engineering and mathematics \u2014 key to twitchy, physics-based drone racing \u2014 could help shape future airmen, the service argues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/2023\/05\/22\/the-next-army-recruiting-tool-amid-a-slump-it-could-be-the-metaverse\/\" target=\"_blank\">Military recruitment efforts<\/a> have struggled for years: The Army missed its fiscal 2022 recruiting goal by roughly 15,000 new soldiers, and the Air Force this year is expected to fall about 10% short of its own target. The reasons vary: Fewer Americans are meeting basic fitness standards, a healthy job market is luring candidates away from signing up and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/394283\/confidence-institutions-down-average-new-low.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">overall confidence in public institutions<\/a> has sharply contracted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brig. Gen. Christopher Amrhein, the commander of the Air Force Recruiting Service, told C4ISRNET that the Drone Racing League\u2019s patrons are part of an ideal pool from which to seek recruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe competition is spectacular, the content is immersive and educational, and the league engages a coveted audience of young, high-energy tech-setters who have a passion for flight, innovation and technology,\u201d he said July 26. \u201cThey are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/04\/10\/the-genesis-of-todays-recruiting-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\">future U.S. Air Force recruits<\/a> and airmen, and a core reason why we continue to renew our partnership with DRL year after year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the league do?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Drone Racing League defines \u201ctech-setters\u201d as 16- to 34-year-olds not attracted to legacy sports like football, baseball and basketball. Instead, the demographic gravitates toward technology, competitive gaming and simulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DRL racing premise is deceptively simple: A pilot must maneuver a drone from a first person point of view through an obstacle course as quickly as possible and in competition with other fliers. Points are dished out based on results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Competitions are held in stadiums across the globe and in the virtual realm, via the DRL Simulator, <a href=\"https:\/\/thedroneracingleague.com\/play\/\" target=\"_blank\">a realistic video game<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DRL Simulator already features an Air Force workbench, where players can construct custom racing drones, and the Air Force Boneyard maps, where players can zoom through a deserted airport in the daytime or darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The league\u2019s metrics show more than 80% of fans favor collaboration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/electronic-warfare\/2023\/07\/12\/us-military-losing-electronic-warfare-muscle-memory-cq-brown-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\">with the Air Force<\/a>, a long-standing partner. Internal data also shows fans are 30 times more likely to engage with the service on social media channels.
