{"id":50203,"date":"2023-10-11T17:44:14","date_gmt":"2023-10-11T17:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/10\/11\/space-force-seeks-proposals-for-project-apollo-technology-hub\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:33:18","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:33:18","slug":"space-force-seeks-proposals-for-project-apollo-technology-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/space\/2023\/10\/11\/space-force-seeks-proposals-for-project-apollo-technology-hub\/","title":{"rendered":"Space Force seeks proposals for Project Apollo technology hub"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The Space Force is taking applications from companies and universities for the first round of space domain awareness projects at its Colorado Springs, Colorado-based technology hub, Project Apollo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology accelerator, focused on improving the service\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2023\/06\/06\/space-force-marketplace-links-commanders-to-commercial-tracking-data\/\" target=\"_blank\">ability to identify and track objects in space<\/a>, will kick off its first three-month innovation cycle Oct. 26. The initial projects will get after capability gaps in three areas: space launch custody, object identification and decision aids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProject Apollo aims to fill those gaps quickly by providing a tools- and data-rich \u2018sandbox\u2019 for industry, academia and government to quickly formulate, test and prove solutions,\u201d Space Systems Command said in an Oct. 10 statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the area of space launch custody, the service is interested in capabilities that use unclassified and commercially available data to quickly detect a space launch, predict its orbit and trajectory and pass that information to a sensor that can then track that object. Object identification involves using things like behavior, frequency and radar emissions and orbital data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2023\/05\/18\/space-force-may-seek-new-bidders-for-future-deep-space-radars\/\" target=\"_blank\">to detect space objects<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sdataplab.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Project Apollo<\/a> is also focused on capabilities that can take data gathered through launch custody and object analysis and provide it to decision-makers in a simple and intuitive manner. These \u201cdecision aids\u201d should require minimal training and help users make quick decisions about the implications of engaging a potential threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maintaining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/space\/2022\/04\/08\/spacecom-requests-more-funding-for-key-space-domain-awareness-center\/\" target=\"_blank\">insight about what\u2019s happening in orbit<\/a> is a top priority for the Space Force. The service maintains a network of ground and in-space radars and sensors aimed at supporting that mission, but they lack cohesion. <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2023\/Sep\/14\/2003301146\/-1\/-1\/0\/COMPREHENSIVE-REPORT-FOR-RELEASE.PDF\" target=\"_blank\">A Defense Department space strategy review released last month<\/a> highlighted these \u201cstovepiped systems\u201d as a barrier to creating a \u201ccomprehensive understanding of the complex and congested space operational environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn an increasingly dynamic and congested space domain, [space domain awareness] requires an integrated sensor system that leverages DoD, other U.S. Government, and international and commercial partner services,\u201d according to the September report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Project Apollo is one of the Space Force\u2019s two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssc.spaceforce.mil\/Portals\/3\/Documents\/PRESS%20RELEASES\/Space%20Systems%20Command%E2%80%99s%20New%20TAP%20Lab%20kicks%20off%20with%20Project%20Apollo%20to%20accelerate%20innovation%20in%20space%20domain%20awareness.pdf?ver=SpVulXNYAGLoAVNAZbAf1A%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\">Tools, Applications and Processing, or TAP Labs<\/a>. The first of those labs is located Boulder, Colorado, and is focused on battlespace awareness and missile detection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The intent is to drive collaboration among various agencies and institutions and use that work to quickly field new capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To date, the Project Apollo hub is partnered with Mitre Corp., Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Aerospace Corp. and <a href=\"https:\/\/supracoders.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Space Force\u2019s Supra Coder initiative<\/a>, which supports data and coding
