{"id":50321,"date":"2023-04-26T18:48:29","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T18:48:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/04\/26\/zero-trust-could-have-limited-pentagon-leak-navy-cto-says\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:38:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:38:59","slug":"zero-trust-could-have-limited-pentagon-leak-navy-cto-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2023\/04\/26\/zero-trust-could-have-limited-pentagon-leak-navy-cto-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Zero trust could have limited Pentagon leak, Navy CTO says"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=ef889dcb-a56b-4da4-8cba-33e674ed609f\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/video-poster-ef889dcb-a56b-4da4-8cba-33e674ed609f.png\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">C4ISRNET&#8217;s Courtney Albon speaks with a senior Navy technology official on ensuring that communications networks are reliable, secure and dependable.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The Navy\u2019s chief technology officer said that if the Pentagon had already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/cyber\/2022\/11\/22\/pentagon-publishes-zero-trust-cyber-strategy-eyes-2027-implementation\/\" target=\"_blank\">implemented its \u201czero-trust\u201d approach<\/a> to protecting its information networks, it may have more quickly detected a recent, high-profile classified document leak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discovery this month that a 21-year-old member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard with a top secret security clearance had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2023\/04\/18\/air-force-to-review-base-after-classified-documents-leak\/\" target=\"_blank\">posted possibly hundreds of classified documents <\/a>to a gaming website called Discord has drawn attention to the U.S. Defense Department\u2019s ability to combat threats from within its own networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy CTO Don Yeske said April 26 during the virtual C4ISRNET Conference that while a zero-trust approach to network defense may not have prevented the leak, the underlying tenets would have helped the department detect the security breach sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe whole point of zero trust is to never trust. Always verify and assume breach,\u201d Yeske said. \u201cYou begin from the point of assuming your network has been compromised, and if it hasn\u2019t been compromised, that compromise is inevitable. Insider threats light up like a Christmas tree when that is your approach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon released its zero-trust strategy last November, laying out a plan to implement the basic elements of the \u201ctrust no one\u201d approach by 2027. The model <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/cyber\/2023\/01\/20\/amazon-other-pentagon-cloud-service-providers-face-zero-trust-test\/\" target=\"_blank\">requires that users and their devices be constantly evaluated<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPart of what you do in a zero-trust approach is, every time a particular asset is accessed, you evaluate that access according to a set of policies,\u201d Yeske said, noting that he doesn\u2019t have knowledge of the investigation beyond what\u2019s been reported publicly. \u201cThat policy-driven evaluation would have identified, I believe, a pattern of activity here where someone who\u2019s a network administrator, someone who is an IT professional accessing this kind of information . . . would have been questioned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to the leak, the Pentagon announced April 17 it has revoked access to highly classified information for some users and is conducting a 45-day review of its security policies. Yeske declined to confirm whether the Navy has initiated a separate review, but said the service is \u201ca part of that broader DoD team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy is making good progress implementing zero trust and is modernizing its network environment based on the department\u2019s strategy, Yeske said, adding that the 2027 deadline is mostly realistic if the service can stay on course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are continuing to do a lot of development and testing in that environment,\u201d he said. \u201cIn order to get there
