{"id":50428,"date":"2024-02-01T22:15:15","date_gmt":"2024-02-01T22:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2024\/02\/01\/general-atomics-demos-3-d-printed-air-launched-effects-vehicle\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:50:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:50:57","slug":"general-atomics-demos-3-d-printed-air-launched-effects-vehicle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2024\/02\/01\/general-atomics-demos-3-d-printed-air-launched-effects-vehicle\/","title":{"rendered":"General Atomics demos 3-D printed air-launched effects vehicle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/01\/22\/general-atomics-demos-gray-eagles-role-in-multidomain-ops\/\" target=\"_blank\">General Atomics Aeronautical Systems<\/a> said it successfully released a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/05\/15\/army-evaluating-first-launched-effects-prototype\/\" target=\"_blank\">air-launched effects<\/a> platform made with additive manufacturing from the internal weapons bay of an MQ-20 Avenger unmanned system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company partnered with Divergent Technologies, Inc. to design and build the Advanced Air-Launched Effects vehicle, or A2LE, using Divergent\u2019s Adaptive Production System (DAPS) \u201cto support rapid, low-cost manufacturing of the demonstration vehicle,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Nov. 28 demonstration at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, showed additive manufacturing, also known as 3-D printing, early in the design process can create efficiencies, the company said. It\u2019s a key step in validating AM process and material properties for incorporation in future systems to be employed by both manned and unmanned platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The flight was \u201ca crucial first step in demonstrating GA-ASI\u2019s ability to rapidly develop, manufacture, and test a Small Unmanned Aircraft System (SUAS) in a controlled, low-risk approach,\u201d Mike Atwood, company vice president of advanced programs, said in the statement. \u201cA2LE demonstrates the coupling of GA-ASI\u2019s pedigreed aircraft design capabilities with Divergent\u2019s DAPS, paving the way for continued maturation of affordable, modular SUAS platforms that can be tailored to meet warfighter needs at a fraction of the cost and lead time of currently fielded systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company is planning<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/09\/05\/jumping-into-algorithmic-warfare-army-aviation-tightens-kill-chain-with-networked-architecture\/\" target=\"_blank\"> a network<\/a> of A2LEs providing a \u201cpersistent, expansive grid\u201d for surveillance, attack, enemy air defense suppression or communication pathways, according to the statement, while enhancing current and future manned and unmanned platforms with increased capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Army has been extensively evaluating launched effects for roughly five years and is considering several size classes of launched effects. It\u2019s evaluating an initial small, launched-effects prototype \u2013 a collaboration between Anduril Industries, RTX\u2019s Collins Aerospace and Aurora Flight Sciences \u2013 as it experiment swith requirements and capabilities for a future program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service plans to launch these small, uncrewed aircraft not only from air platforms, but from launchers on the ground or off vehicles. It has demonstrated the capabilities several times, including at the service\u2019s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/project-convergence\/2021\/05\/17\/us-army-aviation-exercise-unveils-unprecedented-progress-as-service-preps-for-future-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">Edge exercise in 2021, <\/a>which experiments with technology to enhance operations in the aerial tier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Atomics demonstrated another ALE \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2023\/01\/31\/general-atomics-air-launched-eaglet-gets-its-wings\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Eaglet<\/a> \u2014 that the company deployed from a Gray Eagle UAS a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Eaglet would fit in the large class, the company said, which translates to having the ability to carry a wide variety of more powerful sensors and payloads. The Gray Eagle would still be able to carry it for thousands of kilometers before launching it. A2LE is considered to fit in the small category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGeneral Atomics has been approaching the future of uninhabited aerial vehicles and systems from a \u2018family of systems\u2019 approach,\u201d said C. Mark Brinkley, a spokesman. \u201cWhether air launched or ground launched, recoverable or expendable, we see these aircraft as offering different options configured for different missions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company is working on several launched effects offerings in addition to Eaglet and A2LE like Sparrowhawk and LongShot, Brinkley added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll of these are similar and all of them are different, but the main theme here is affordable mass at scale, attacking a variety of problems in a variety of ways,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt wouldn\u2019t be fair to compare these aircraft head-to-head at this point, because they\u2019re all being driven by different requirements and intended uses,\u201d Brinkley noted, \u201cbut each of these programs are absolutely leveraging best practices and lessons learned from one program to the next to help us
