Aquilino open to greater directed-energy trials"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. commander in the Indo-Pacific is interested in more widely experimenting with and deploying directed-energy weapons designed to zap electronics or incinerate incoming threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy Adm. John Aquilino, who leads the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/2022\/08\/17\/senators-look-past-europe-push-pentagon-jadc2-vision-for-indo-pacific\/\" target=\"_blank\">China-focused Indo-Pacific Command<\/a>, on Aug. 28 said he is \u201ccertainly looking for asymmetric advantages\u201d and that industry should \u201cbring it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m very encouraged by the high-energy laser capability that\u2019s being experimented with and utilized,\u201d Aquilino said at the NDIA Emerging Technologies for Defense conference, held blocks from the White House in Washington. \u201cThere\u2019s a few of them on a couple of our ships, to be able to blind, dazzle and kill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. and other nations have for decades pursued directed-energy weapons, capable of taking out targets at the speed of light. The Pentagon for the past three years has spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/budget\/\" target=\"_blank\">an average $1 billion<\/a> on development; it requested at least $669 million in fiscal 2023 for unclassified research, testing and evaluation and at least $345 million for unclassified procurement, according to the Congressional Research Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weapons come mainly in two forms: high-energy laser and high-power microwave. The former focuses a beam or beams of energy to blind, cut or inflict heat damage on a target. (Aaron Favila\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy in the past adopted Lockheed Martin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/05\/23\/when-it-comes-to-missile-killing-lasers-the-us-navy-is-ready-to-burn-its-ships\/\" target=\"_blank\">High Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance<\/a>, or HELIOS, and the in-house Optical Dazzling Interdictor Navy, or ODIN, to tackle drones, small boats and intelligence-gathering systems. Both have been installed aboard destroyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other services are tinkering with directed energy, as well. The Army in January tapped Epirus for prototypes of its high-power microwave kit known as Leonidas. The deal was worth $66 million. It also used Lockheed\u2019s Mobile Radio Frequency-Integrated UAS Suppressor, or MORFIUS, to take out drones in a June demonstration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe key is about acceleration,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/2023\/03\/16\/us-chinese-commands-in-pacific-arent-talking-says-indo-pacific-boss\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aquilino said<\/a> Monday. \u201cIf that capability exists, and we can deliver in 18 to 24 months, I\u2019m ready to plug it in. I\u2019m ready to experiment with it tomorrow. I\u2019ve got the largest test range on the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aquilino\u2019s remit includes China and North Korea, as well as allies Australia, Japan and South Korea.
