{"id":50595,"date":"2023-09-28T02:07:06","date_gmt":"2023-09-28T02:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/09\/28\/from-parts-to-hypersonics-pentagon-sees-3d-printing-as-game-changer\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:54:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:54:48","slug":"from-parts-to-hypersonics-pentagon-sees-3d-printing-as-game-changer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/pentagon\/2023\/09\/28\/from-parts-to-hypersonics-pentagon-sees-3d-printing-as-game-changer\/","title":{"rendered":"From parts to hypersonics, Pentagon sees 3D printing as \u2018game changer\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>CORRECTION: This story has been updated to remove statements erroneously attributed to DeVries.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2023\/02\/02\/shipbuilding-industry-looks-to-3d-printing-to-accelerate-pace\/\" target=\"_blank\">growth of additive manufacturing<\/a> is a \u201cgame changer\u201d for the military \u2014 one that can facilitate everything from creation of parts for systems to accelerating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/battlefield-tech\/2022\/10\/31\/pentagon-seeks-additive-manufacturing-to-spur-hypersonic-development\/\" target=\"_blank\">development of hypersonic weapons<\/a>, a top Defense Department official said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keith DeVries, deputy director of the Office of the Secretary of Defense\u2019s Manufacturing Technology Program, said in a Defense News webcast Wednesday that additive manufacturing has made great strides in the last few years and opened up novel possibilities for creating new weapons and components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additive manufacturing has particularly come in handy when designing new systems, DeVries said, allowing programs to quickly create complex components than traditional manufacturing processes would allow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additive manufacturing has advanced since its early days, when it made objects from more fragile polymers to materials with higher tensile strength. Today, DeVries said, these manufacturing techniques create objects from high-entropy metals that are particularly strong and stand up to wear and tear, using lasers to melt metals that can withstand high temperatures and allowing more complex shapes to be crafted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose advancements have been fundamental unto themselves,\u201d DeVries said. \u201cNow, it feels like we\u2019re turning a corner and we\u2019re trying to find what the sweet spot is for how big of a build volume is appropriate for us to apply that technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And hypersonic weapons are a prominent example of a program where additive manufacturing can be useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scramjet propulsion systems that are central to some hypersonics, for example, require complex chambers that can be difficult to make, DeVries said. But 3D printing these components is allowing hypersonic weapons manufacturers \u201csome fantastic capabilities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additive manufacturing would allow scramjet components to be made from high-temperature metals in a way that eliminates the need to have complex welds or brazing joints, DeVries said. Those joints need to be tested to ensure they\u2019re sound, he said, but a component made via additive manufacturing that doesn\u2019t have those joints won\u2019t need such testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing able to incorporate additive manufacturing is enabling us to manufacture complexity that has not been able under the subtractive, traditional manufacturing methods,\u201d DeVries said. He noted hypersonic development is still in the rapid prototyping phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But DeVries said traditional manufacturing techniques such as casting and forging still have a place, and warned the DoD and manufacturers should only seek to replace those techniques with additive manufacturing \u201cin a very intentional and frankly limited way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to treat [additive manufacturing] as a tool in the toolkit, and we want to apply it exactly where it\u2019s necessary, and where it
