Now NATO is looking to standardize processes to ensure that generative AI and other new tech can be also be utilized effectively and safely, according to David van Wheel, NATO\u2019s assistant secretary general for emerging security challenges .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe AI strategy endorsed by NATO in 2021, will be up for review next year and a new version will [eventually] be adopted, which will in part include language around generative AI,\u201d he said during a media roundtable on Nov. 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Van Wheel said that while the initial strategy primarily defined the six <a href=\"https:\/\/nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nato.int%2Fcps%2Fen%2Fnatohq%2Fofficial_texts_187617.htm&#038;data=05%7C01%7Ccary.oreilly%40mco.com%7Ca5ef98bff248479ac1c808dbf198bbda%7C1d5c96e57ee2446dbed8d0f8c50edea5%7C1%7C0%7C638369410530507630%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&#038;sdata=sytKRlA9AuqcYiB6OO2OrNxzKAbBAG8pCxQES8dcNTo%3D&#038;reserved=0\">principles<\/a> guiding the responsible use of AI, NATO has been working on more recent initiatives to operationalize these concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince February, NATO has been working on an AI intelligence certification standard aiming to translate the principles outlined in the 2021 strategy into concrete checks and balances, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New forms of AI, of which ChatGPT is an example, are able to generate different types of content based on data provided by users. The more information it is given, the better the model learns and produces increasingly realistic outputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the key concerns around generative AI are that given the significant amount of data it requires, the likelihood that sensitive intelligence could be misused or leaked by malicious actors is increasing. If not effectively protected, confidential documents could be exploited to create deep-fakes or spread misleading facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will make it [the revised strategy] as public as we can, to inform the public and those operating in the field of AI of what we are expecting,\u201d van Wheel added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An alarming number of cyber offenses have recently been reported worldwide ranging from attacks on critical infrastructure to interference with governmental agencies. For Russia specifically, cyber warfare has been an important aspect of its sustained efforts to disrupt Ukrainian networks throughout the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCyber is still playing a big role in Ukraine, it just doesn\u2019t get the same attention as other types of attacks,\u201d van Wheel said. \u201cEven now, we\u2019re seeing ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian data centers and energy infrastructure, which as winter approaches, will be even more critical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a Microsoft <a
