{"id":51380,"date":"2023-12-01T05:01:00","date_gmt":"2023-12-01T05:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2023\/12\/01\/anduril-reveals-roadrunner-drone-mum-on-first-us-customer\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:33:55","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:33:55","slug":"anduril-reveals-roadrunner-drone-mum-on-first-us-customer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2023\/12\/01\/anduril-reveals-roadrunner-drone-mum-on-first-us-customer\/","title":{"rendered":"Anduril reveals Roadrunner drone, mum on first US customer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Anduril Industries unveiled its latest autonomous system, Roadrunner \u2014 a reusable aircraft that can carry a range of payloads, takeoff vertically and intercept and destroy airborne threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/battlefield-tech\/2023\/09\/07\/anduril-acquires-drone-company-blue-force-technologies\/\" target=\"_blank\">The California-based technology firm<\/a> revealed two variants of the system Dec. 1. The baseline Roadrunner can quickly launch and fly at high subsonic speeds and its payloads can be reconfigured for a variety of missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roadrunner-M is a munitions version of the system designed to protect against uncrewed aerial system threats. The company says the vehicle can rapidly locate, track and disable adversary systems and its interceptors can be recovered, refueled and reused if they\u2019re not deployed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInstead of having to fire multiple interceptors at one threat, you can now deploy multiple interceptors to go out and loiter, to gather additional intelligence, to be on site in a timely way in the case that you actually want to employ them,\u201d Chief of Strategy Chris Brose told reporters Nov. 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palmer Luckey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/dsei\/2023\/09\/12\/anduril-announces-ghost-x-with-more-payload-capacity-longer-flights\/\" target=\"_blank\">founder of Anduril <\/a>, told reporters during the same embargoed briefing the company has been designing, building and demonstrating the Roadrunner systems with its own funding for two years and is about to begin low-rate production through a contract with a U.S. customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luckey declined to disclose the customer, but said the initial order is for \u201chundreds of units\u201d and he expects the company will quickly scale into the hundreds of thousands. Brose noted that the U.S. government has been closely watching the effort and Roadrunner has demonstrated operational utility through a rigorous flight test program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of our main motivations as a company has been to prove it and then talk about it,\u201d Brose said. \u201cI think we\u2019re at the beginning of that conversation on Roadrunner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The use of uncrewed aircraft systems on the battlefield has expanded in recent years and the Defense Department is working to both leverage the potential of swarming drones in its own arsenal and counter increased threats from adversaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/smd\/2023\/08\/08\/pentagons-counter-drone-office-to-demo-swarm-destruction-in-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\">established the Joint Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office<\/a> to develop a coordinated, long-term response to drone threats in 2019, and in August, Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks revealed a new DoD initiative called Replicator to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/2023\/11\/21\/replicator-candidates-to-be-chosen-by-early-december-pentagon-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">field thousands of autonomous systems over the next two years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brose said Roadrunner was designed with both of those challenges in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re very hopeful that the government will see in this capability what we see in it, which is a novel solution that is built to be adaptable to where those threats are going in the near future \u2013 which, by the way, has been a process that\u2019s been playing out over the past few years, and it\u2019s just going to get worse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Counter-drone systems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fielding capabilities such as drones and other high-need systems in larger quantities is a \u201ccritical challenge,\u201d for DoD right now, Brose said, but he\u2019s hopeful the department is serious about funding large-scale production efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur belief and our hope is that this is an opportunity to really produce this capability at scale, which is something we are absolutely capable of doing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On cost, Luckey said a single Roadrunner is \u201cin the low hundreds of thousands of dollars,\u201d but the company expects that to drop as it produces the systems at a higher rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe more of these we make, the cheaper they get,\u201d he said, adding that the company\u2019s decision to build its own turbojet engines rather than work with another supplier will help it control cost and performance moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brose noted that while Roadrunner-M may cost more than other counter-drone systems, it can address a wider range of threats, making it a lower cost alternative to missiles like the Patriot, which cost about $4 million each.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRoadrunner can come in and actually fill a gap in the market that is perhaps maybe a bit more exquisite and a bit more expensive than those low-end solutions, but it\u2019s going to be an order of magnitude cheaper than a patriot missile,\u201d he said. \u201cThat seems like a pretty good deal to
