{"id":51480,"date":"2024-12-14T00:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-14T00:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2024\/12\/14\/us-navy-warship-will-make-its-first-port-call-in-8-years-in-cambodia\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:25:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:25:44","slug":"us-navy-warship-will-make-its-first-port-call-in-8-years-in-cambodia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/global\/asia-pacific\/2024\/12\/14\/us-navy-warship-will-make-its-first-port-call-in-8-years-in-cambodia\/","title":{"rendered":"US Navy warship will make its first port call in 8 years in Cambodia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PHNOM PENH, Cambodia \u2014 A U.S. Navy warship will make a port call next week in Cambodia, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-cambodia-military-exercise-dragon-ream-1f5223df00b43770d549d5a7539ce08b\" target=\"_blank\">China\u2019s close ally in Southeast Asia<\/a>, the first such visit in eight years, according to a Cambodian statement Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cambodia\u2019s Ministry of National Defense said the littoral combat ship Savannah will dock at the port of Sihanoukville on the Gulf of Thailand on Dec. 16-20. Savannah carries a crew of 103, the ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit was scheduled after a U.S. request for a port call, it added, and would \u201cstrengthen and expand the bonds of friendship as well as promote bilateral cooperation&#8221; between the two nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States has not yet announced the visit and there was no comment from the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia&#8217;s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relations have long been rocky and Washington has criticized Cambodia\u2019s government for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cambodia-election-us-hun-sen-restrictions-3cd1b0cbc8fff914c295183de18e9666\" target=\"_blank\">political repression and human rights violations<\/a>. The U.S. has also been concerned about the upgrading of a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/china-cambodia-ream-warships-navy-port-e21dbae6bd1b9943f7bec8bbaa040da9\" target=\"_blank\">Cambodian naval base near Sihanoukville<\/a>, which it believes will be utilized by Chinese vessels to serve Beijing\u2019s strategic interests in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. and others have also expressed concerns about China\u2019s navy establishing a base at Ream, which would give it easier access to the Malacca Strait, a critical shipping route between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ream base, on Cambodia\u2019s southern coast, is not far from Sihanoukville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Controversy over the Chinese activity at Ream initially arose in 2019 when The Wall Street Journal reported that an early draft of an agreement seen by U.S. officials would allow China 30-year use of the base, where it would be able to post military personnel, store weapons and berth warships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cambodia\u2019s government has denied such an agreement, emphasizing that the country&#8217;s constitution did not allow foreign military bases on its soil. Still, Chinese work on the base has continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Savannah will not dock at the naval base, though the defense ministry said the planned port call will include \u201ca working meeting with the commander of the Ream Naval Base,\u201d meetings with provincial officials and \u201ca friendship sports competition between the crews of the U.S. Navy and the Cambodian Navy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday, Cambodia\u2019s foreign ministry noted \u201cpositive momentum of bilateral ties and cooperation\u201d and \u201cthe reinvigoration of military-to-military cooperation&#8221; between Cambodia and the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early June, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2024\/06\/04\/us-defense-chief-visits-cambodia-seeking-reset-amid-china-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin visited Cambodia<\/a> and held talks with Prime Minister Hun Manet and other senior officials. He also met with Cambodian alumni of U.S. military training programs.
