{"id":51482,"date":"2025-05-09T17:04:45","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T17:04:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2025\/05\/09\/us-coast-guard-to-add-heavy-icebreaker-amid-shipbuilding-overhaul\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:10:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:10:33","slug":"us-coast-guard-to-add-heavy-icebreaker-amid-shipbuilding-overhaul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2025\/05\/09\/us-coast-guard-to-add-heavy-icebreaker-amid-shipbuilding-overhaul\/","title":{"rendered":"US Coast Guard to add heavy icebreaker amid shipbuilding overhaul"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Full production of a new polar security cutter for the U.S. Coast Guard was recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.uscg.mil\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4171630\/coast-guard-to-begin-full-production-activities-for-polar-security-cutter-hull\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news.uscg.mil\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4171630\/coast-guard-to-begin-full-production-activities-for-polar-security-cutter-hull\/\">approved by the Department of Homeland Security<\/a>, as the administration seeks to boost shipbuilding and maritime security in the increasingly competitive Arctic region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new vessel \u2014 the first heavy polar icebreaker to be built in the U.S. in about five decades \u2014 will be constructed by Bollinger Shipyards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ben Bordelon, president and CEO of Bollinger Shipyards, hailed the move <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bollingershipyards.com\/news\/bollinger-shipyards-to-commence-full-production-on-u-s-coast-guard-polar-security-cutter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.bollingershipyards.com\/news\/bollinger-shipyards-to-commence-full-production-on-u-s-coast-guard-polar-security-cutter\/\">in a release<\/a> as \u201ca historic achievement not only for Bollinger Shipyards but also for American shipbuilding.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSecuring the green light for full production underscores the confidence the U.S. government places in Bollinger to deliver the nation\u2019s first heavy polar icebreaker in nearly 50 years,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Coast Guard currently fields a single heavy polar icebreaker, the USCGC Polar Star, and a single medium polar icebreaker, the USCGC Healy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Healy was put out of action by an electrical fire last July and the Polar Star is nearly five decades old. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To compensate for a dearth of existing icebreakers, the service in December purchased a commercially available light polar icebreaker \u2014 which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycg.uscg.mil\/News\/Article\/4016098\/coast-guard-adds-first-polar-icebreaker-to-its-fleet-in-25-years\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mycg.uscg.mil\/News\/Article\/4016098\/coast-guard-adds-first-polar-icebreaker-to-its-fleet-in-25-years\/\">renamed the USCGC Storis<\/a> \u2014 that became the first to be added to the service\u2019s fleet in a 25-year period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The green light for the heavy polar icebreaker, meanwhile, comes as the U.S. military has observed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycg.uscg.mil\/News\/Article\/4016098\/coast-guard-adds-first-polar-icebreaker-to-its-fleet-in-25-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mycg.uscg.mil\/News\/Article\/4016098\/coast-guard-adds-first-polar-icebreaker-to-its-fleet-in-25-years\/\">a recent surge in foreign maritime activity<\/a> in the Arctic region, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/why-did-china-and-russia-stage-joint-bomber-exercise-near-alaska#:~:text=Last%20summer%2C%20a%20flotilla%20of,ship%2C%20and%20other%20support%20vessels.\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/why-did-china-and-russia-stage-joint-bomber-exercise-near-alaska#:~:text=Last%20summer%2C%20a%20flotilla%20of,ship%2C%20and%20other%20support%20vessels.\">joint Chinese-Russian air patrol near Alaska last summer<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/04\/restoring-americas-maritime-dominance\/\" rel=\"\">an April 9 executive order<\/a>, President Donald Trump called for a new strategy to improve maritime security in the Arctic. Resources to ramp up Coast Guard vessel production are part of the reconciliation bill currently being considered by lawmakers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill would provide over $9 billion for Coast Guard vessel manufacturing, which could see the construction of up to 30 new cutters of various sizes and operational capabilities, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2025\/04\/29\/reconciliation-bill-calls-for-14-6b-in-coast-guard-cutters-new-arctic-icebreakers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2025\/04\/29\/reconciliation-bill-calls-for-14-6b-in-coast-guard-cutters-new-arctic-icebreakers\">as reported by USNI News<\/a>. Those new vessels could include three or more Arctic security cutters, two polar security cutters, eight heritage-class offshore patrol cutters and up to 15 fast response cutters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legislation also includes provisions to <a href=\"https:\/\/transportation.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/ans_to_ti_committee_print_reconciliation.pdf?utm_campaign=198253-345\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/transportation.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/ans_to_ti_committee_print_reconciliation.pdf?utm_campaign=198253-345\">increase Coast Guard aviation capacity<\/a>, with funding for fixed and rotary wing aircraft and maintenance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional vessels are only one facet of sweeping changes now being introduced to the U.S. Coast Guard, which is currently being restructured according to a recently announced initiative called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycg.uscg.mil\/News\/Article\/4145599\/coast-guard-force-design-2028\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mycg.uscg.mil\/News\/Article\/4145599\/coast-guard-force-design-2028\/\">Force Design 2028<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are executing transformational change to renew the Coast Guard,\u201d said Acting Commandant Kevin Lunday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycg.uscg.mil\/News\/Article\/4145599\/coast-guard-force-design-2028\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mycg.uscg.mil\/News\/Article\/4145599\/coast-guard-force-design-2028\/\">in a statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changes would include the addition of a Coast Guard service secretary, a move that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/1190?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%22%5C%22coast+guard%5C%22+and+%5C%22secretary%5C%22%22%7D&amp;s=1&amp;r=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\"
