{"id":51804,"date":"2018-12-09T01:29:26","date_gmt":"2018-12-09T01:29:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/12\/09\/heres-the-latest-on-lockheeds-massive-long-range-anti-ballistic-missile-radar\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:42:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:42:09","slug":"heres-the-latest-on-lockheeds-massive-long-range-anti-ballistic-missile-radar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/12\/09\/heres-the-latest-on-lockheeds-massive-long-range-anti-ballistic-missile-radar\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s the latest on Lockheed\u2019s massive long-range anti-ballistic missile radar"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MOORESTOWN, New Jersey &#8212; Lockheed Martin is on schedule to deliver its massive solid-state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/04\/20\/long-range-discrimination-radar-passes-preliminary-design-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">Long-Range Discrimination Radar <\/a>in 2020, according to executives who spoke Friday with reporters here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The radar, which is being d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/2015\/10\/22\/lockheed-wins-784m-long-range-radar-contract\/\" target=\"_blank\">eveloped and tested at Lockheed\u2019<\/a>s radar manufacturing facility in Moorestown for the Missile Defense Agency, is slated to be installed at Clear Air Force Station, Alaska. Construction on the facility began in September, according <a href=\"https:\/\/news.lockheedmartin.com\/2018-10-16-Lockheed-Martin-Reaches-Technical-Milestone-for-Long-Range-Discrimination-Radar\" target=\"_blank\">to a Lockheed press <\/a>release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The radar achieved a major technical milestone in October when it successfully tracked a satellite using its hardware and software working in conjunction. Ultimately the radar will be used in conjunction with ground-based interceptors to defend the U.S. from ballistic missile attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology that is going into LRDR is opening up new lines of business for Lockheed, said Chandra Marshall, the LRDR program director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot every application needs to be the size of LRDR, so it\u2019s scalable from both a hardware and software perspective,\u201d Marshall said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The radar destined for Japan&#8217;s AEGIS Ashore installation is a scaled-down version of LRDR, Marshall said. It&#8217;s also technology Lockheed is hoping to bring to the new homeland defense radar in Hawaii, which should be awarded in the coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2018\/07\/03\/lockheed-will-beat-out-raytheon-for-japan-aegis-ashore-radar-report\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-530951668.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lockheed to reportedly beat out Raytheon for Japan missile defense radar<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Japan has been seeking to bolster its missile defense as North Korea barges ahead with its missile development program.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed has developed the radar and the software concurrently, Marshall said, which has sped up fielding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the key advantages of the radar, which is about 25-times larger than a AN\/SPY-1 array, is that it can be maintained and fixed without bringing the array down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the unique things about this radar is the high availability,\u201d Marshall said. \u201cUnlike some radars in the field today, you can actually maintain the radar while it\u2019s operating. You don\u2019t have to interrupt the mission to maintain it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lockheed accomplishes this by building the massive radar on a series of self-contained transmitter and receiver units that are grouped in blocks, which are in turn connected to a breaker. So if one unit in a block needs replacing, you can shut down a small section of the radar and switch it out while the rest of the radar continues to radiate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement for the Hawaii homeland defense radar should come in December, Marshall said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt &#8230; leverages everything that we\u2019ve done for LRDR and improves on it based on the different threats that we have to attack for HRD-H,\u201d Marshall said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Lockheed can secure the HDR-H contract, it could mean two more contracts for homeland defense radars down the line.
