{"id":52525,"date":"2022-06-10T15:08:20","date_gmt":"2022-06-10T15:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/06\/10\/norway-ends-contract-for-nh90-helicopters-wants-full-refund\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:49:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:49:07","slug":"norway-ends-contract-for-nh90-helicopters-wants-full-refund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2022\/06\/10\/norway-ends-contract-for-nh90-helicopters-wants-full-refund\/","title":{"rendered":"Norway ends contract for NH90 helicopters, wants full refund"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">COPENHAGEN, Denmark \u2014 NATO-member Norway has terminated its 2-decade-old contract with a French manufacturer for 14 maritime helicopters, citing delays, errors and time-consuming maintenance, the defense minister said Friday, calling the move \u201ca serious decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Norwegian government will return the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2016\/11\/17\/norway-boosts-defense-budget-to-protect-key-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\">NH90 helicopters<\/a> it has received so far and expects a full refund of the nearly 5 billion kroner (U.S. $525 million) it paid, according to Defence Minister Bj\u00f8rn Arild Gram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRegrettably, we have reached the conclusion that no matter how many hours our technicians work, and how many parts we order, it will never make the NH90 capable of meeting the requirements of the Norwegian Armed Forces,\u201d Arild Gram said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The helicopter was developed in the mid-1990s by NHIndustries, a partnership between European companies Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo Helicopters and Fokker Technologies based in Aix-en-Provence, France. The aircraft is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2020\/10\/12\/france-orders-beefed-up-nh90-choppers-for-special-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\">used by numerous countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norway ordered 14 helicopters for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/nato-priorities\/2018\/06\/12\/norways-coast-guard-stares-down-big-challenges-in-arctic\/\" target=\"_blank\">coast guard<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/frozen-pathways\/2021\/08\/27\/norway-sets-timeline-to-deploy-sub-hunting-aircraft-in-the-arctic\/\" target=\"_blank\">anti-submarine warfare<\/a> duties in 2001, the Norwegian Armed Forces said.
