JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md.\u2014 The U.S. Air Force\u2019s top general has made multidomain command and control <\/a>one of his top priorities. Now he wants to see it become the Pentagon\u2019s No. 1 technology development initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means that when Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Dave Goldfein retires next year, he\u2019d like to pass the baton to the Defense Department\u2019s undersecretary of research and engineering \u2014 currently Mike Griffin \u2014 to execute a program<\/a> that will encompass all the military services and the platforms they operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve made a lot of progress<\/a>, but we\u2019re only about 20-30 yards down the field and we\u2019ve got to speed it up. So what\u2019s the tipping point? At what point does this really take off? And I personally think that it\u2019s at the point where we can make this profitable for industry,\u201d Goldfein said May 10 in an exclusive interview with Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd [research and engineering] I think can help with that. And if we can get to that point, I think this is going to take off, and it will be the most important work that we do as a department, in my opinion.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Multidomain command and control, or MDC2, has become an often-used and nebulously vague buzzword of the Air Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
