{"id":52915,"date":"2016-04-22T11:11:48","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T11:11:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2016\/04\/22\/italian-navy-co-hosts-event-to-sell-vessels\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:54:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:54:47","slug":"italian-navy-co-hosts-event-to-sell-vessels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2016\/04\/22\/italian-navy-co-hosts-event-to-sell-vessels\/","title":{"rendered":"Italian Navy Co-Hosts Event To Sell Vessels"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Italian Navy is co-hosting what could be described as a secondhand\u00a0ship show\u00a0in Italy next month as it retires dozens of seasoned vessels\u00a0and brings new ships into service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from 11 navies around the world are due to attend the event at\u00a0the Navy&#8217;s La Spezia base May 24-27 to scout for bargains among\u00a0various classes of vessel, which Italy is hoping to make some much needed\u00a0money by selling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also present at the event will be Italian companies offering their\u00a0services for refits and upgrades to give the vessels a technological\u00a0makeover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Seafuture &#038; Maritime Technologies 2016 event has been running for\u00a0five years, but this is the first time the Navy has stepped in as an\u00a0official partner, according to the organizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Up until now the Navy has negotiated the sale of its vessels on a one-to-one basis, so this is a new approach,&#8221; said Laura Parducci, an\u00a0official with the local chamber of commerce, which organizes the event.\u00a0&#8220;People coming will be able to sign deals there and then.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy&#8217;s decision to put its ships in the shop window at La Spezia is\u00a0due to the large number it is phasing out. After investing heavily in\u00a0fleet renewal in the 1970s, a number of the vessels bought at the time\u00a0are now due for retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking in parliament on April 20, Italian Defence Minister Roberta\u00a0Pinotti said that 54 vessels are due out of service by 2025. In the meantime, Italian Navy chief Adm. Giuseppe De Giorgi has won approval\u00a0for a \u20ac5.4 billion (US $6.1 billion) funding package, which is being spent on a\u00a0massive, new shipbuilding program covering seven near-multimission\u00a0vessels, a support ship, a landing helicopter dock and fast craft for\u00a0special forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other more recent purchases are FREMM frigates, which are now\u00a0entering service, as well as two Horizon frigates and a carrier, the Cavour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prospective buyers at La Spezia will be able to visit and go for a sail\u00a0on a Maestrale-class frigate, a Lerici-class minesweeper or a Lupo-class\u00a0frigate. One vessel from each class \u2014 which are being phased out \u2014 will\u00a0be moored during the show at La Spezia, said Parducci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italy has already sold Minerva-class corvettes to the Bangladesh Coast\u00a0Guard, and sold Lupo-class frigates to Peru a decade ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parducci said that the navies of Singapore and Brazil were sending rear\u00a0admirals to the show, while other navies sending officials included\u00a0Georgia, Japan, Morocco, Peru, Senegal, Tunisia, Turkey, Uruguay and\u00a0Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The idea is that visitors can meet firms like Fincantieri, which would\u00a0host a vessel during an upgrade, as well as the small firms that could\u00a0be involved in the work,&#8221; a spokeswoman with the chamber of commerce said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Italian admiral is expected to speak about equipping older ships with today&#8217;s emerging technologies.\u00a0&#8220;Themes will include unmanned platforms and robotics,&#8221; Parducci said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Non-Italian firms will also be present, hoping to obtain work upgrading\u00a0ships being purchased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have French, Turkish and Canadian companies\u00a0coming,&#8221; Parducci said. &#8220;There has been contact with Iranian firms but\u00a0we are still awaiting permission from the Italian Navy to send a formal\u00a0invite.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the La Spezia event nears, Fincantieri and Finmeccanica are stepping\u00a0up work on the Navy&#8217;s new vessels, with propulsion contracts handed out\u00a0last month to General Electric and Rolls-Royce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2490\" height=\"3500\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635969055502487084-giuseppe-de-giorgijpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113991\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635969055502487084-giuseppe-de-giorgijpg.jpg 2490w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635969055502487084-giuseppe-de-giorgijpg.jpg?resize=213,300 213w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635969055502487084-giuseppe-de-giorgijpg.jpg?resize=768,1080 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635969055502487084-giuseppe-de-giorgijpg.jpg?resize=729,1024 729w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635969055502487084-giuseppe-de-giorgijpg.jpg?resize=1093,1536 1093w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635969055502487084-giuseppe-de-giorgijpg.jpg?resize=1457,2048 1457w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2490px) 100vw, 2490px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Italian Navy chief of staff Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi attends a ceremony marking the departure of the Cavour aircraft carrier from the Civitavecchia harbour for its mission &#8220;A country on the move&#8221; on November 13, 2013. Giuseppe De Giorgi is shown attending a ceremony marking the departure of the Cavour aircraft carrier from the Civitavecchia harbour on Nov. 13, 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Andreas Solaro\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the program has also been dragged into a political scandal that has\u00a0prompted the resignation of a government minister and seen De\u00a0Giorgi placed under investigation for suspected influence peddling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Italy&#8217;s industry minister, Federica Guidi, resigned this month after magistrates\u00a0in Potenza,\u00a0southern Italy, said they suspected her partner of\u00a0pressuring her to promote a law which favored his activities in the oil\u00a0business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The magistrates also placed De Giorgi under investigation on\u00a0suspicion of helping Gemelli\u00a0obtain a contract at a Navy port in\u00a0Sicily. Prosecutors suspect the Navy chief wanted Gemelli, in return, to\u00a0push his partner Guidi to ensure that funding of the new Navy ships was\u00a0speedily\u00a0approved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guidi&#8217;s ministry was the provider of the \u20ac5.4 billion needed to\u00a0kick-start the program after it was first launched in 2014. De Giorgi has denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally, the funding was to be released over a number of years to pay back bank loans worth \u20ac3.829 billion obtained up front\u00a0to build the vessels, as well as just less than\u00a0\u20ac1.6 billion to cover\u00a0the interest on the loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That changed when parliament decided the funds were available\u00a0immediately and loans were unnecessary, meaning the \u20ac1.6 billion in\u00a0interest was suddenly freed up to buy more ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addressing parliament on April 20, Pinotti denied the\u00a0naval deal was the fruit of corruption, noting that it has been\u00a0scrutinized 15 times during its approval phase in the lower and upper\u00a0house of parliament, and was essential given the number of ships going\u00a0out of service.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Italian Navy is
