{"id":53181,"date":"2020-12-14T23:07:38","date_gmt":"2020-12-14T23:07:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2020\/12\/14\/the-us-navy-has-an-upgraded-tomahawk-heres-5-things-you-should-know\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:55:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:55:13","slug":"the-us-navy-has-an-upgraded-tomahawk-heres-5-things-you-should-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2020\/12\/14\/the-us-navy-has-an-upgraded-tomahawk-heres-5-things-you-should-know\/","title":{"rendered":"The US Navy has an upgraded Tomahawk: Here\u2019s 5 things you should know"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2013 The U.S. Navy test-fired its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2020\/02\/11\/as-china-continues-rapid-naval-expansion-the-us-navy-begins-stockpiling-ship-killing-missiles\/\" target=_blank>Block V Tomahawk<\/a> from the destroyer Chafee in December, introducing the newest generation of the venerable Tomahawk cruise missile to its arsenal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The modifications are designed to bring the sub-sonic cruise missile into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2018\/01\/19\/national-defense-strategy-released-with-clear-priority-stay-ahead-of-russia-and-china\/\" target=_blank>era of great power competition<\/a>. Why is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/surface-navy-association\/2015\/01\/14\/raytheon-working-on-tomahawk-with-seeker\/\" target=_blank>this Tomahawk <\/a>different from all other Tomahawks, and can this old Cold Warrior keep up in the era of hypersonic missiles?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s five things to know about the Block V:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>1. Increased capabilities. <\/b>Raytheon\u2019s Tomahawk Block V, when fully realized in its Block Va and Block Vb varieties, will be expected to hit surface ships at Tomahawk ranges \u2013 in excess of 1,000 miles \u2013 with the integration of a new seeker. It also will integrate a new warhead that will have a broader range of capabilities, including greater penetrating power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tomahawk\u2019s range is especially important in the Asia-Pacific, where China\u2019s rocket force has extraordinary reach with its DF-26 and DF-21 missiles, with ranges of 2,490 and 1,335 miles respectively, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. The missiles are destined not just for the VLS launchers of surface ships but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/10\/28\/submarines-are-poised-to-take-on-a-major-role-in-strike-warfare-but-is-that-a-good-idea\/\" target=_blank>on attack submarines<\/a>. Read more here:<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2020\/11\/17\/the-us-navy-is-moving-to-put-more-ship-killer-missiles-on-submarines\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/tlam.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The US Navy is moving to put more ship-killer missiles on submarines<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">US Navy submarines will soon be able to kill ships at a range of 1,000 miles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>2. More survivable. <\/b>The first iteration of the Block V upgrades the missile\u2019s communication and navigation systems. This is about making it tougher to counter and detect electronically, said Bryan Clark, a retired submarine officer and senior fellow at The Hudson Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has greater electronic hardening to be able to work through jamming more effectively,\u201d Clark said. \u201cThe hardening and the electronic countermeasures they\u2019ve put into it make it harder to find and target with radar, and that improves its survivability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019ve incorporated a lot of survivability into Tomahawk over the years, this takes it a step further to make it less susceptible to jamming of its seeker or its communications. But it could, perhaps, also counter enemy radar that might be used to target it and shoot it down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, Raytheon\u2019s Tomahawk program manager told reporters at an event at the missile plant in Tucson, Ariz., that the navigation system upgrades will ensure the missile can strike targets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2017\/08\/21\/raytheon-marks-milestone-for-its-tomahawk-looks-to-the-future\/\" target=_blank>even if GPS is taken down<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>3. Subsonic is a feature, not a bug. <\/b>With all the emphasis on supersonic and hypersonic missiles and with the improvements in air defenses, that might make Tomahawk seem like a fuddy-duddy by comparison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are good reasons to keep producing the Tomahawk, even with its slower speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe benefit of the sub-sonic missile is range,\u201d Clark said. \u201cBeing sub-sonic means its also able to travel at a more fuel-efficient speed. So, the fact that the Tomahawk can travel more than 1,000 miles is a function of the sub-sonic speed. To get that kind of range out of a super-sonic missile you\u2019d need something much larger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/tlam.jpg_39cc6d.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-114070\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/tlam.jpg_39cc6d.jpg 900w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/tlam.jpg_39cc6d.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/tlam.jpg_39cc6d.jpg?resize=768,512 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sailors on the destroyer Barry train on planning a Tomahawk mission. (Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>4. It\u2019s cheap. <\/b>Well, relatively so. The missile has been able to stay at the $1 million price range, which is on the low end for missiles. Raytheon\u2019s supersonic SM-6 can reach speeds of Mach 3.5 \u2013 with future iterations believed to be capable of reaching hypersonic speeds \u2013 but cost more than four times as much per shot and have less range. That\u2019s the Tomahawk\u2019s key differentiator, said Jerry Hendrix, a retired Navy captain and analyst with Telemus Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe key capability of Tomahawk is the cost.\u201d Hendrix said. \u201cIt can be purchased in larger quantities and you can afford to lose some to defensive capabilities even as you penetrate. That\u2019s one of the reasons why Tomahawk is going to be in the inventory for a while to come, even as it brings back that longer-range anti-ship capability that we\u2019ve been missing for some time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tom Karako, an expert in missile technology with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, agreed that cost is a big advantage of Tomahawk, especially for low-end missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs long as they can keep them to about a million dollars per shot, the Navy is going to want those all day long,\u201d Karako said. \u201cThe next time the President says to the Navy, \u2018Hey, go schwack this terrorist training camp,\u2019 they\u2019re going to want Tomahawks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>5. It\u2019s all in the mix. <\/b>The key to thinking about a sub-sonic cruise missile is understanding how it fits into a mix of weapons, Karako said. Not everything is going to be hypersonic or even supersonic, nor does it have to be, he argued, but the cost per salvo make it attractive as part of a varied and complex threat to present an adversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe question is, \u2018What\u2019s the going to be the mix between hypersonic things and things that are supersonic and subsonic?\u2019,\u201d he said. \u201cThat, I think, is the right question. As long as you have standoff, subsonic and supersonic are going to be part of the equation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven for the high-end fight, I don\u2019t think the hypersonic stuff will fully replace sub-sonic stuff.
