ANKARA, Turkey \u2014 Turkey\u2019s defense procurement authority has officially launched a competition for a program designed to develop and later build a power group for the Altay, the Turkish indigenous tank in the making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Undersecretariat for Defense Industries, or SSM, invited local engine makers to develop the \u201cpower group\u201d consisting of an engine and transmission system for the Altay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis will be a contract worth well over $1 billion,\u201d an industry source said. \u201cAll the same, it will be quite a challenge for Turkey\u2019s local industry to develop and produce the power pack [group] on a price-efficient and timely basis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SSM\u2019s invitation to bidding requires local firms to develop the power group for the Altay \u201cwith maximum local input and minimum foreign technology.\u201d It says the program aims to end Turkey\u2019s dependency on foreign power technology in the Altay program.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
