{"id":53425,"date":"2021-06-24T14:42:54","date_gmt":"2021-06-24T14:42:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/06\/24\/bell-v-280-valor-tech-demonstrator-retires-from-flight\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:49:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:49:37","slug":"bell-v-280-valor-tech-demonstrator-retires-from-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2021\/06\/24\/bell-v-280-valor-tech-demonstrator-retires-from-flight\/","title":{"rendered":"Bell V-280 Valor tech demonstrator retires from flight"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Bell\u2019s future vertical lift technology demonstrator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/01\/09\/bell-v-280-flies-autonomously-for-first-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">the V-280 Valor tiltrotor<\/a>, has finished its flying career, according to a June 24 company announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demonstrator was built for the U.S. Army Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator program and flew for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2017\/12\/18\/v-280-valor-flies\/\" target=\"_blank\">first time in December 2017<\/a>. It spent the last three-and-half years proving out the service\u2019s requirements for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2020\/10\/13\/us-army-firms-up-requirements-for-future-long-range-assault-aircraft-ahead-of-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\">future long-range assault aircraft<\/a>, or FLRAA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service continued flying the demonstrator beyond the JMR program in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/03\/31\/us-army-enters-final-phase-of-development-before-kicking-off-future-long-range-assault-aircraft-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">two-phase competitive demonstration and risk-reduction effort<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell will continue into the second phase of the risk-reduction effort \u201cto provide initial preliminary designs for major subsystems and the conceptual weapons system, based on data-proven performance that ensures transformational capabilities will be delivered in line with the Army\u2019s schedule,\u201d the company said in its statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/12\/10\/army-preps-for-competition-limited-to-bell-and-sikorsky-for-long-range-assault-helicopter\/\" target=\"_blank\"> is close to releasing its request for proposals<\/a> for FLRAA that will kick off the official program of record. Bell is expected to compete against a Sikorsky-Boeing team that also flew a JMR technology demonstrator \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2020\/10\/14\/sb-1-defiant-coaxial-demonstrator-aircraft-hits-230-knots\/\" target=\"_blank\">SB-1 Defiant coaxial helicopter.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is on a path to procure two new vertical lift aircraft by 2030, pursuing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/show-reporter\/global-force-symposium\/2021\/03\/18\/future-attack-recon-helo-program-heads-into-army-review-next-month\/\" target=\"_blank\">future attack reconnaissance aircraft, or FARA, <\/a>in addition to FLRAA. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/army-modernization\/2020\/03\/25\/lockheed-and-bell-will-compete-head-to-head-to-build-us-armys-future-attack-recon-aircraft\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bell and Sikorsky are competing against one another<\/a> in the FARA competition, and each is building an aircraft for a first flight in fiscal 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Bell\u2019s first V-280 technology demonstrator is retiring, the technology and lessons learned from the first aircraft will live on in the company\u2019s solution that will be submitted for the FLRAA competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the demonstration and risk-reduction phase, the V-280 flew more than 214 hours and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/05\/21\/bells-v-280-completes-low-speed-agility-tests\/\" target=\"_blank\">showed off low-speed agility and long-range cruise capabilities, and reached a maximum 305-knot cruising speed<\/a>. The Army\u2019s threshold requirement is expected to be in the 230- to 250-knot range for the FLRAA program of record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five Army experimental test pilots have flown the V-280 over 15 sorties, according to the company statement. The company used feedback from Army pilots, mechanics and infantry squads to help inform design plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also through the V-280 program, Bell provided \u201cextensive\u201d data explaining how its aircraft, through the incorporation of a modular, open-systems approach, brings efficiency to a future program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have come a long way since we started our journey eight years ago. We made commitments, we safely executed our program on time, and we validated our performance claims and the accuracy of our digital models through flight demonstrations,\u201d Ryan Ehinger, Bell\u2019s vice president and program director for FLRAA, said in the statement. \u201cUltimately, the Army doesn\u2019t send warfighters into battle riding in the back of digital models and so we thought it was important to bring that physical proof.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe FLRAA challenge presented by the U.S. Army was unattainable using helicopter configurations. They have been clear about the need to modernize and field transformational capabilities,\u201d Keith Flail, Bell\u2019s executive vice president of advanced vertical lift systems, said in the statement. \u201cWe assessed several vertical lift technologies and determined the tiltrotor to be the only solution to the agility, range, and speed requirements of a Long-Range Assault Aircraft that
