{"id":53789,"date":"2018-04-27T01:47:58","date_gmt":"2018-04-27T01:47:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2018\/04\/27\/s-97-raider-on-the-edge-of-returning-to-flight\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:58:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:58:28","slug":"s-97-raider-on-the-edge-of-returning-to-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2018\/04\/27\/s-97-raider-on-the-edge-of-returning-to-flight\/","title":{"rendered":"S-97 Raider on the edge of returning to flight following last year\u2019s crash"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASHVILLE, Tenn. \u2014 Lockheed Martin-owned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\/2018\/04\/20\/sikorsky-modifies-raider-helicopter-to-use-us-armys-future-engine\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Sikorsky\u2019s S-97 Raider<\/a> \u2014 an experimental coaxial helicopter \u2014 is on the edge of returning to flight after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/08\/03\/s-97-raider-makes-hard-landing-during-flight-test\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">a hard landing last year<\/a> took out its first prototype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company had a second Raider prototype standing by, so following the accident, Sikorsky began to ready that aircraft for flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second aircraft began ground testing on April 25 at the company\u2019s West Palm Beach, Florida, facility, Tim Malia, Sikorsky\u2019s program director for Future Vertical Lift light development, told Defense News at the Army Aviation Association of America annual summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2017\/09\/11\/s-97-raider-sustained-substantial-damage-in-crash-but-program-moves-forward\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/raider.jpg_8818e7.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">S-97 Raider sustained \u2018substantial damage&#8217; in crash, but program moves forward<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Sikorsky\u2019s S-97 Raider experimental helicopter sustained \u201csubstantial damage\u201d from a hard landing during a flight test at the Sikorsky Development Flight Center in West Palm, Beach, Florida, in early August, according to a National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report issued Monday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are eager to go into and complete a whole ground test cycle,\u201d Malia said, adding that it will result in getting the helicopter into the air this summer, where the company will pick up where it left off with the first aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/aaaa\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to find out more about what\u2019s next for U.S. Army aviation from the 2018 AAAA conference.<\/a><\/b><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2015\/05\/22\/sikorsky-s-97-raider-achieves-first-flight\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Before the hard landing<\/a>, the company had been able to complete low-speed handling, and in 20 hours of flight testing it expanded the speed envelope to 150 knots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During this summer, Malia said, Sikorsky aims to push the speed above 200 knots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the company has been careful not to sacrifice flight safety as it brings the new prototype into flight testing, \u201cthere is an element that goes a little bit faster\u201d since the aircraft preparing to fly isn\u2019t the first one, Malia explained. Sikorsky was able to more quickly build it, he said, and the company will be able to move through some initial testing faster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Findings of the cause of the hard landing had nothing to do with Sikorsky\u2019s X2 coaxial technology used both in Raider and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/03\/14\/defiant-undergoing-rigorous-testing-prior-to-first-flight-this-year\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">SB-1 Defiant demonstrator<\/a> the company is building with Boeing for the Army\u2019s Joint Multi-Role demonstration, which will help define requirements for a Future Vertical Lift aircraft expected to fly in the 2030s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe neighborhood of the root cause is the complex interaction between the ground, the landing gear, the flight control system and the associated pilot interactions,\u201d Chris Van Buiten, Sikorsky\u2019s vice president of technology and innovation, said in response to a National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report issued in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The findings required Sikorsky to make some changes to the flight-control system software to assure the same thing will never happen again, Van Buiten said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sikorsky is hoping the U.S. Army will choose Raider for its FVL light aircraft that will serve the attack reconnaissance mission. The service has not yet indicated how and when it will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/global-force-symposium\/2018\/03\/30\/army-future-vertical-lift-hones-in-on-attack-recon-long-range-assault\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\"
