{"id":54120,"date":"2019-04-02T23:07:17","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T23:07:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/04\/02\/us-army-needs-another-year-to-pick-protection-system-for-stryker\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:57:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:57:01","slug":"us-army-needs-another-year-to-pick-protection-system-for-stryker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2019\/04\/02\/us-army-needs-another-year-to-pick-protection-system-for-stryker\/","title":{"rendered":"US Army needs another year to pick protection system for Stryker"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Army plans to take another year to pick an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2018\/10\/08\/heres-who-is-participating-in-the-armys-active-protection-systems-rodeo\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Active Protection System<\/a> for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/08\/20\/army-pursuing-possible-alternatives-for-a-stryker-based-active-protection-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stryker combat vehicle, <\/a>according to the military deputy to the Army acquisition chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is already fielding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2017\/10\/09\/europe-bound-army-to-urgently-field-abrams-tanks-with-trophy-active-protection-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rafael-made Trophy APS on its Abrams tank<\/a> and has picked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/06\/19\/iron-fist-revealed-the-likely-interim-active-protection-system-for-bradley\/\" target=\"_blank\">IMI\u2019s Iron Fist for the Bradley Fighting Vehicle<\/a> \u2014 both as interim systems until the Army can develop an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2017\/04\/06\/army-speeds-up-future-modular-active-protection-system-for-combat-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\">advanced future system<\/a> \u2014 but it had to go back to square one when its attempt to outfit Stryker with Herndon, Virginia-based Artis LLC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2017\/10\/09\/iron-curtain-ready-to-bring-active-protection-to-stryker\/\" target=\"_blank\">Iron Curtain<\/a> system failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/08\/24\/iron-curtain-is-out-as-possible-active-protection-system-for-stryker\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/StrykerIronCurtain.jpg_7f41f8.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Iron Curtain is out as possible active protection system for Stryker<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">After an extensive evaluation, the Army has chosen to take Artis LLC&#039;s Iron Curtain active protection system out of the running for an interim solution for the Stryker combat vehicle.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army put out a request for possible systems to be qualified as an interim solution on the Stryker. Officials ultimately chose a Rafael and DRS team and a Rheinmetall and UBT team to participate in a live-fire rodeo last November to see if either system might work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while it was believed a decision would come soon after, Lt. Gen. Paul Ostrowski testified at an April 2 Senate Armed Services Airland Subcommittee hearing that it would take another year to make a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have two companies that are in the process of competing for [APS on Stryker]. One is a venture between \u2026 Rafael and DRS and the other is Rheinmetall and UBT, so we are in the process of going through that,\u201d Ostrowski said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to take about a year, quite frankly, in order to put those systems on the vehicles, characterize them and make a determination as to whether or not to move forward with either one of the two vendors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2018\/03\/08\/rheinmetall-intensifies-push-to-enter-us-army-combat-vehicle-fleet-protection-program\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RheinmetallADSmainphoto.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Rheinmetall intensifies push to enter US Army\u2019s vehicle protection program<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The company\u2019s marketing effort this week at its Germany-based proving grounds comes as potential fiscal 2018 funding would cover the qualification of another APS for Army combat vehicles waiting in the wings for congressional approval.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ostrowski added the service had asked each team to provide blueprints and to build their non-developmental APS systems to fit on Stryker. \u201cThey are in the process of doing that build,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd once the build is put on the vehicle, it\u2019s then a matter of testing in order to ensure that it works,\u201d Ostrowski said, which is not unlike the process the Army went through to characterize and qualify APS systems on both Abrams and Bradley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Israeli company Rafael and DRS submitted its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2018\/09\/24\/rafael-to-demo-lighter-active-protection-capability-on-stryker-in-2019\/\" target=_blank> Trophy VPS<\/a> \u2014 a lighter version of Trophy \u2014 for the rodeo. Germany-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/dsei\/2017\/09\/12\/rheinmetall-wants-in-on-us-army-fleet-protection-effort\/\" target=_blank>Rheinmetall <\/a>partnered with Unified Business Technologies, based in Michigan, and submitted its Active Defense System \u2014 now renamed StrikeShield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the rodeo, participants did not perform a full installation of their systems on the vehicle. Instead, they set up test rigs in front of Strykers or hung their system off a Stryker in the evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the rodeo, the idea was to select one, possibly two systems, to begin some sort of installation characterization on a platform deemed most appropriate for the APS system, Col. Glenn Dean, the Army\u2019s Stryker program manager who is also in charge of the interim APS effort, told Defense News in October 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Ostrowski said the Army bought 88 Iron Fist systems for Bradley in 2019 and planned to buy another 36 in the FY20 budget.
