Jacqueline Van Ovost, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/08\/21\/gen-van-ovost-takes-the-reins-at-air-mobility-command\/\">took over<\/a> Air Mobility Command in August, has been nominated to take over U.S. Transportation Command. Army Lt. Gen. Laura Richardson, currently the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/07\/11\/groundbreaking-female-general-in-command-of-us-army-north\/\">head of U.S. Army North<\/a>, is nominated for a fourth star and to lead U.S. Southern Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy Adm. John Aquilino, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/news\/coronavirus\/2020\/04\/01\/pacific-fleet-commander-outlines-plans-for-containing-outbreak-on-carrier-roosevelt\/\">head of U.S. Pacific Fleet<\/a>, has been nominated to take over U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, which is seen as the region of primary focus by the Biden administration. SOUTHCOM is currently run by Adm. Craig Faller. INDOPACOM is headed by Navy Adm. Philip Davidson, who is in Washington this week to argue for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2021\/03\/05\/indopacom-head-defends-pacific-fund-pricetag\/\">$27 billion fund<\/a> to bolster the U.S. in the region. TRANSCOM is led by Army Gen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/space\/2020\/10\/07\/the-pentagon-wants-spacex-delivering-cargo-around-the-globe-and-a-live-test-could-come-next-year\/\">Stephen Lyons<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nominations of Van Ovorst and Richardson are expected to be featured at a White House event Monday celebrating Women\u2019s History Month. If confirmed, the two will become only the second and third women to run a combatant command; Air Force Gen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/interviews\/2016\/03\/18\/gen-lori-robinson-nominated-as-northcom-head\/\" target=_blank>Lori Robinson<\/a> became the first in 2016 when she took over U.S. Northern Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/17\/us\/politics\/women-generals-promotions-trump.html\">New York Times reported<\/a> the nominations for the two women had been agreed upon inside the Pentagon last year, but that then-Secretary of Defense Mark Esper decided to hold the nominations up until after the November election, over concerns that the Trump White House would not approve the selections because of their gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey were chosen because they were the best officers for the jobs, and I didn\u2019t want their promotions derailed because someone in the Trump White House saw that I recommended them or thought DoD was playing politics,\u201d Esper told the Times. \u201cThis was not the case. They were the best qualified.
