{"id":54317,"date":"2021-10-11T18:10:35","date_gmt":"2021-10-11T18:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/10\/11\/army-software-factory-to-churn-out-soldier-coders\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:59:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:59:09","slug":"army-software-factory-to-churn-out-soldier-coders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2021\/10\/11\/army-software-factory-to-churn-out-soldier-coders\/","title":{"rendered":"Army Software Factory to churn out soldier coders"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 As the military struggles to recruit more skilled cyber employees, the Army has been experimenting with a novel solution: growing battlefield coders from the untapped talent within its ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/cloud\/2021\/04\/29\/cloud-computing-speeds-up-new-military-software\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army Software Factory<\/a>, based at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/09\/17\/army-futures-command-picks-austin-community-college-for-software-factory\/\" target=\"_blank\">Austin Community College in Texas<\/a>, showcased at the Association of the U.S. Army\u2019s annual meeting several applications they developed. But the real point, they said, is to develop software making professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere should the Army be investing talent when it comes to the choice between truck driver or software developer or platform engineer. You\u2019ve got such amazing talent in the Army that\u2019s mislabeled, that\u2019s underutilized,\u201d the program\u2019s co-director, Lt. Col. Vito Errico, said Monday at the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In August, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/cyber\/2021\/08\/02\/inspector-dod-may-struggle-to-recruit-needed-cyber-workers-because-it-failed-to-track-open-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Department of Defense Inspector General found<\/a> that the department lacks a clear picture of its cyber workforce needs. The Army was the only component with an automated quality assurance process to track its cyber workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea behind the Army Software Factory is to generate teams to prototype, develop and morph applications for operational networks on the battlefield. On display Monday were applications to better connect soldiers to job openings within the Army, manage preventative maintenance and organize an Army squad\u2019s tasks and scheduling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New cohorts of 25 soldiers will cycle in every six months (the first started in January) and after another five months, teach successive cohorts. In the first phase, they\u2019re paired with Silicon Valley experts to learn how to act as a product team, prototype solutions and \u2015 using feedback from fellow soldiers \u2015 build for production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are a variety of [military occupational specialties], a variety of ranks. We don\u2019t really care what rank you are and where you went to grad school,\u201d Errico said. \u201cThe idea is to put rank aside and promote ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the program is a pilot under the auspices of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/ausa\/2019\/10\/16\/army-futures-command-is-leading-a-cultural-shift-much-to-the-delight-of-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army Futures Command<\/a>, and it remains to be seen exactly how it will influence future talent management policy and whether it will be scaled up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of people recognize the Army doesn\u2019t want to make this type of investment and lose these kinds of soldiers, and so the thought is how do we best do that long-term,\u201d Errico
