The next-generation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2020\/05\/13\/dod-asks-congress-for-columbia-submarine-block-buy\/\" target=_blank>ballistic missile submarine Columbia<\/a> will account for much of that growth, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Dynamics<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/10\/28\/after-a-leadership-shakeup-at-general-dynamics-a-murky-future-for-submarine-building\/\" target=_blank> Electric Boat <\/a>and Huntington Ingalls Industries\u2019 Newport News shipyard are the nation\u2019s only two submarine builders. It\u2019s because submarines remain a singular competitive advantage, a critical competitive advantage for the United States with near-peer competitors and peer competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am quite confident that given my belief that the defense budget is driven by the threats that are key elements of our marine group, growth will be nicely supported.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company last year inked more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/10\/28\/after-a-leadership-shakeup-at-general-dynamics-a-murky-future-for-submarine-building\/\" target=_blank>$10 billion in contracts for the first two Columbia-class<\/a> boats. The Navy has consistently said fielding Columbia is its top acquisition priority. Electric Boat is also building the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/12\/02\/navy-awards-largest-ever-shipbuilding-contract-to-electric-boat-for-new-attack-submarines\/\" target=_blank> Virginia-class Block V<\/a> submarine, along with HII Newport News. The Navy is expected to buy the Virginia class at a rate of two subs per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Dynamics, which also owns Arleigh Burke-class destroyer-builder Bath Iron Works, believes that platform will continue to be important to the Navy, Novakovic said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has been waffling about how many of its new Flight III Burkes it intends to buy. The service\u2019s 2021 budget proposal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/12\/24\/pentagon-proposes-big-cuts-to-us-navy-destroyer-construction-retiring-13-cruisers\/\" target=_blank>cut four destroyers<\/a> from its five-year plan, proposing eight down from 2020\u2032s proposal of 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But General Dynamics continues to be bullish on submarines and is investing in its infrastructure at Electric Boat.
