{"id":54909,"date":"2021-05-10T14:46:53","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T14:46:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2021\/05\/10\/rheinmetall-plants-roots-in-michigan\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:07:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:07:00","slug":"rheinmetall-plants-roots-in-michigan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/land\/2021\/05\/10\/rheinmetall-plants-roots-in-michigan\/","title":{"rendered":"Rheinmetall plants roots in Michigan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2020\/10\/20\/rheinmetall-eyes-do-over-in-new-pitch-of-its-lynx-vehicle-to-the-us-army\/\" target=\"_blank\">Germany\u2019s Rheinmetall <\/a>has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/12\/18\/bradley-replacement-request-for-proposals-hits-street-with-flexibility-for-foreign-participation\/\" target=\"_blank\">a new subsidiary<\/a> and it is planting its roots in the heart of American vehicle-manufacturing territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">American Rheinmetall Vehicles (ARV) opened its new facility in the DC3S complex in Sterling Heights, Michigan, as it prepares to compete to replace the U.S. Army\u2019s Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/12\/09\/us-army-launches-design-phase-for-bradley-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\"> with an optionally manned one<\/a>, according to a May 10 company statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has been preparing to compete in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/04\/15\/pencils-up-bids-are-due-for-armys-bradley-replacement-and-its-only-the-beginning\/\" target=\"_blank\">Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV)<\/a> program for years, unveiling its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/eurosatory\/2018\/06\/12\/rheinmetall-lifts-curtain-on-new-next-gen-combat-vehicle-with-hopes-to-spark-us-army-interest\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lynx 41 next-generation fighting vehicle in Paris, France, <\/a>in the summer of 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rheinmetall then teamed with Raytheon to submit Lynx as its offering for OMFV in the fall of 2019, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2019\/10\/04\/lynx-41-disqualified-from-bradley-replacement-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\">was unable to deliver its prototype vehicle<\/a> to the Army on time and was eliminated from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/07\/17\/army-drops-draft-rfp-for-bradley-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\">the competition<\/a>. Only General Dynamics Land Systems was able to get its bid sample in by the deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With only one competitor, the Army <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/02\/07\/army-wades-back-into-effort-to-replace-bradley-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\">canceled the program and embarked<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/07\/17\/army-drops-draft-rfp-for-bradley-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\">a fresh attempt with a different strategy<\/a>: One that has a digital design phase in order to refine characteristics needed in a future vehicle ahead of bending any metal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rheinmetall remains locked in with Raytheon, but has added Textron and L3Harris to the team as well. Bids were due last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company is competing with other major prime contractors like GDLS, incumbent BAE Systems and a team of Oshkosh Defense and South Korean defense firm Hanwha as well as smaller or non-traditional businesses like Mettle Ops and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/04\/28\/point-blank-throws-hat-in-ring-to-design-us-armys-bradley-replacement\/\" target=\"_blank\">Point Blank Enterprises<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army is expected to choose up to five prime contractor teams this summer to design rough digital prototypes. The Army will award up to three contracts for a detailed design and prototype phase that will include options for low-rate initial production. The service will select one vendor to go into production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ARV is expanding by almost 28,000 square feet with room for over 30 team members that will support the OMFV offering, the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The facility includes two high bay areas that will be used for a hardware and software integration lab and a prototype build area \u201cas the program progresses,\u201d according to the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDriven by strong and consistent growth, this early investment initiative demonstrates ARV\u2019s commitment to the OMFV program and the U.S. Army,\u201d the statement notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe investments we are making in our operations are a strong reflection of American Rheinmetall Vehicle\u2019s position in the marketplace and positive outlook for the future,\u201d Matt Warnick, ARV\u2019s Managing Director, said in the statement. \u201cI\u2019m excited that our team and new facility are well-positioned to fully support the Lynx OMFV offering and look forward to continuing to change the landscape of the U.S. defense
