{"id":54940,"date":"2019-02-20T05:44:09","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T05:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/02\/20\/as-an-ffgx-decision-nears-shipbuilder-fincantieri-upgrades-its-wisconsin-shipyard\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:05:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:05:24","slug":"as-an-ffgx-decision-nears-shipbuilder-fincantieri-upgrades-its-wisconsin-shipyard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/2019\/02\/20\/as-an-ffgx-decision-nears-shipbuilder-fincantieri-upgrades-its-wisconsin-shipyard\/","title":{"rendered":"As an FFG(X) decision nears, shipbuilder Fincantieri upgrades its Wisconsin shipyard"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ABU DHABI \u2014 The days of dramatic pictures of ships launching sideways into the water <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2015\/07\/30\/lcs-hits-its-stride-in-marinette\/\">at Marinette Marine shipyard in Wisconsin<\/a> are likely coming to an end, a representative from Fincantieri\u2019s international ship business told Defense News on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of investments <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/interviews\/2018\/03\/06\/interview-fincantieri-ceo-on-unifying-europes-splintered-naval-industry\/\">Fincantieri<\/a> is making in the yard ahead of building an up-gunned frigate version of Lockheed Martin\u2019s mono-hull variant of the littoral combat ship for Saudi Arabia, the company is investing in a modernized boat-launching facility that gently floats the ships rather than dropping them sideways into the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s certainly romantic, it\u2019s nice looking, but from our point of view it is not the best,\u201d said Enrico Bonetti, a senior vice president at Fincantieri\u2019s international business unit. \u201cSo we need to have much more advanced outfitting at the moment of launch. We\u2019ll have a less dramatic way with a syncrolift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But while the shipyard is primarily focused on the four Saudi multimission surface combatants at Marinette Marine, another, larger prize is on the table: a 20-ship (and perhaps more) program for the U.S. Navy\u2019s future frigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2019\/01\/28\/the-navys-new-more-lethal-frigate-is-coming-into-focus\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/FFGX-1.jpg-1.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The US Navy\u2019s new, more lethal frigate is coming into focus<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The service is zeroing in on a cost and the shape of its new frigate as it prepares to launch an open competition this summer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/02\/16\/navy-awards-design-contracts-for-for-future-frigate\/\">the Navy announced last year<\/a> the top five competitors for the FFG(X) future frigate program, it was readily apparent that Fincantieri\u2019s Marinette Marine was in a good position to grab a healthy slice of the business. Both the Lockheed Martin LCS variant and Fincantieri\u2019s own bid \u2014 its European multimission frigate FREMM \u2014 would be built at Marinette, meaning that Fincantieri essentially has two of the five top choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work that Fincantieri is putting into the yard will help position the company in the competition, which is slated to kick off this summer after the Navy finishes up its last series of design reviews with the top five competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to integrate the yard with new facilities,\u201d Bonetti said. \u201cFirst, we\u2019ve put a huge amount of money into the yard to make it, what I would say, is the most modern shipyard facility in the United States. You can\u2019t recognize the yard now from what it was a few years ago. But due to the size of FFG(X) and, mainly, due to the added workload for MMSC, we needed to improve our capacity. So it\u2019s something that is already underway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The competition itself will be open to all comers, but anyone \u2014 such as BAE Systems\u2019 Type 26 \u2014 who might want to join the hunt would not have had the benefit of a back-and-forth with the Navy\u2019s requirements professionals that the top five competitors had over the past year in the initial conceptual design phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy is planning to buy the first FFG(X) in the fourth quarter of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until then, Fincantieri is focusing on what it must do to get moving on Saudi\u2019s new frigate, though the contract has yet to be finalized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe contract is secured, we\u2019ve been funded for design activities and long-lead item procurement, but the exact figure will be defined and agreed upon next summer,\u201d Bonetti said. \u201cSo this is for us something that is quite important, it will provide the bread and butter for the yard for quite some time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2018\/12\/26\/the-us-navys-surface-fleet-heres-whats-ahead-in-2019\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/monsoor.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The US Navy\u2019s surface fleet: Here\u2019s what\u2019s ahead in 2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The U.S. surface fleet has a big year in store for 2019.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>The plan for FFG(X)<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for the U.S. Navy\u2019s part, it feels good about the process it undertook to quickly get a new frigate to the fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service is zeroing in on a cost and the shape of its new frigate as it prepares to launch the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the conceptual design phase, which kicked off last year, the Navy asked for feedback from the five competitors in the competition. The result was more than 300 suggestions for ways to evolve the design and save money, Naval Sea Systems Command\u2019s FFG(X) program head, Regan Campbell, told an audience at the annual Surface Navy Association Symposium. About 200 of the suggestions the Navy took onboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur requirements are mature,\u201d Campbell said. \u201cWe\u2019ve engaged with industry, gotten a lot of wonderful feedback and significant savings from that engagement. And we are on track to finish those conceptual design contracts, and through that process I think we are going to have a robust competition going into detailed design and construction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five designs participating in the conceptual design phase are variants of Lockheed Martin\u2019s mono-hull LCS as well as Austal USA\u2019s trimaran version, Fincantieri\u2019s FREMM, Navantia\u2019s F-100 frigate and a repurposed version of Huntington Ingalls\u2019 national security cutter design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All told, the Navy is looking at about $800 million per hull after the first unit, Campbell said, which is significantly down from where the program thought it was last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe started closer to the $950 [million mark]; we are trending closer to the $800 [million mark] now,\u201d Campbell said. \u201cSo we have taken some significant costs out of the program.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy\u2019s projection of the cost of the first unit will be revealed in the 2020 budget, scheduled for release in February.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s part of an investment the company is making in the shipyard for Saudi Arabia&#8217;s multimission surface combatant.
