{"id":55118,"date":"2019-12-06T18:47:09","date_gmt":"2019-12-06T18:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2019\/12\/06\/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-us-navys-deadly-and-expensive-new-attack-submarines\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:58:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:58:05","slug":"heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-us-navys-deadly-and-expensive-new-attack-submarines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2019\/12\/06\/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-us-navys-deadly-and-expensive-new-attack-submarines\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s what you need to know about the US Navy\u2019s new deadly (and expensive) attack subs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Navy inked a deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/10\/28\/after-a-leadership-shakeup-at-general-dynamics-a-murky-future-for-submarine-building\/\" target=_blank>General Dynamics Electric Boat<\/a> on Dec. 2 to be the lead contractor for the newest iteration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=virginia+block+v&#038;rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS813US813&#038;oq=Virginia+Block+V&#038;aqs=chrome.0.0l5j69i60l3.2964j0j7&#038;sourceid=chrome&#038;ie=UTF-8\" target=_blank>Virginia-class attack submarine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/12\/02\/navy-awards-largest-ever-shipbuilding-contract-to-electric-boat-for-new-attack-submarines\/\" target=_blank>largest shipbuilding contract in the history <\/a>of the service \u2014 in excess of $22 billion \u2014 the Navy has big plans for Block V. It is destined to be a true multimission submarine, with a strike capability and the ability to delivery large-diameter unmanned underwater vehicles in addition to the more traditional surveillance mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s are the four things you need to know about the vessel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>1. A bigger boat<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of Block V is going to be bigger (much bigger) than its older sisters in the class. Of the nine \u2014 potentially 10 \u2014 boats in the class, eight of them will have 84-foot sections plugged into the hull that will include four large-diameter tubes rated for seven Tomahawks each. In addition to the 12 in the bow, that means each Block V will have the capacity for 40 cruise missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s not just the traditional Tomahawk land-attack missiles that will be stuffed in the payload module. Submariners are envisioning a whole range of missions for the big tubes, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Deploying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/2018\/11\/26\/yes-virginia-there-is-a-submarine-payload-module-that-could-launch-drones\/\">large-diameter unmanned undersea<\/a> vehicles for various missions.<\/li><li>Launching hypersonic prompt-strike missiles.<\/li><li>Launching Tomahawk\u2019s new maritime strike iteration against ships in addition to the existing Harpoon missile.<\/li><li>Torpedoes.<\/li><li>Really anything they can get to fit in there that could benefit from being deployed off a submarine.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1720\" height=\"1080\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vpm.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vpm.jpg.jpg 1720w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vpm.jpg.jpg?resize=300,188 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vpm.jpg.jpg?resize=768,482 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vpm.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,643 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vpm.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,964 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1720px) 100vw, 1720px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A rendered image of the Virginia Block V attack submarine, destined to change the submarine community. Responsibilities galore<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the Navy designed a lot of versatility in the platform, the Block V will act as a Swiss Army knife for undersea warfare, taking on a range of missions that traditionally have gone to the retiring guided-missile submarines, or SSGNs, said Bryan Clark, a retired submarine officer and analyst for the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s going to require a cultural change inside the submarine community, Clark said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Block V will be a marked difference in terms of the concept of operations for a multimission ship,\u201d he said. \u201cFor strike, that mission has largely been sent off to SSGNs: They\u2019ve focused on Tomahawk missions and SEAL delivery; the rest of the attack submarines have focused on focused on traditional intelligence-gathering missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith the introduction of Block V, those missions are going to expand to a larger percentage of the force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of that is already part of submariner training, but the emphasis will have to be increased, Clark predicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSubmariners were always trained on Tomahawk missions, anti-ship missions and swimmer delivery: Those are all things you train for in case you have to do them,\u201d he said. \u201cBut with the advent of Block V, those missions are going to have to be a bigger part of submariner training. And with [the] Tomahawk maritime strike missile coming into the fleet, they are going have an anti-ship mission alongside the older [Los Angeles-class] 688s having the torpedo-tube launched harpoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo in a lot of ways the submarine community is going back in [the] direction it was during the Cold War \u2014 it was a much more expansive mission then back then. Then It narrowed with the introduction of the SSGN. Now its set to expand again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>3. Quiet<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Block V incorporates what they Navy calls an acoustic superiority program, which is basically a comprehensive effort to both improve listening capabilities to find other ships and submarines as well as make the submarine much quieter in the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2016\/03\/28\/submarines-to-become-stealthier-through-acoustic-superiority-upgrades-operational-concepts\">improvements include<\/a> a new vertical array, coatings and machinery-quieting technology throughout the boat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1155\" height=\"650\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Indiana2.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-40231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Indiana2.jpg.jpg 1155w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Indiana2.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Indiana2.jpg.jpg?resize=768,432 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Indiana2.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,576 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1155px) 100vw, 1155px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sailors assigned to the fast-attack submarine Indiana secure mooring lines to the sub. It\u2019s expensive as hell<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As one might expect for a big multi-mission attack submarine, the Virginia Block V is mind-bogglingly expensive. With a total value of the program sitting at $35 billion when government- furnished equipment is added, each sub will cost in excess of $3.5 billion per hull, should the Navy buy all 10 of the Block Vs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has recognized that with the proliferation of long-range anti-ship missiles, the service will need to put more missiles than ever in the air to strike launchers inland and to defend major assets such as aircraft carriers from attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But relying on submarines for the strike component is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, superior submarines mean a higher chance that the Block Vs will be able to operate inside Chinese and Russian anti-access windows \u2014 or areas where surface ships would be vulnerable. The problem is that the Navy might go bankrupt before it creates the volume of fires it would need to combat a massive missile power like China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jerry Hendrix, a Navy analyst with Telemus Group, explained it in an interview earlier this fall: \u201cI think there is a powerful argument to distribute these weapons across the surface force,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you can create a strike weapon that allows the surface force to stand outside of DF-21 and DF-26 range and shoot three-pointers from outside, then yes. To create mass and volume in the submerged force is twice to three times as expensive as it is to create that volume from the surface force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo there is a solid argument just from the standpoint of cost. If I was trying to create 2,000 tubes of hypersonics \u2014 which are much more massive than Tomahawks, won\u2019t fit into a Mark 41 vertical launch system and hence will have to go into a different configuration \u2014 to create that mass in the submerged force is going to be very expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy leadership is increasingly looking to concepts such as a large unmanned surface combatants that could work as external missile magazines for larger manned surface combatants as a model for more affordably boosting its capacity to put missiles in the air.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Navy recently signed its largest-ever shipbuilding contract.
