{"id":55134,"date":"2022-05-17T17:14:53","date_gmt":"2022-05-17T17:14:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/uncategorized\/2022\/05\/17\/rafael-unveils-aerospike-missile-for-close-air-support\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T00:05:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T00:05:42","slug":"rafael-unveils-aerospike-missile-for-close-air-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/smr\/sofic\/2022\/05\/17\/rafael-unveils-aerospike-missile-for-close-air-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Rafael unveils Aerospike missile for close-air support"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JERUSALEM \u2014 Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has unveiled a new air-to-surface missile that the company is pitching as a lightweight munition for fixed-wing aircraft performing close-air support missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Aerospike missile, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/smr\/sofic\/\" target=\"_blank\">unveiled at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference<\/a> in Tampa, Florida, this week, builds on Rafael\u2019s Spike family of missiles, said Gal Papier, vice president of business development at the company\u2019s U.S. division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spike missiles are used by 39 countries and come in different variants, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2020\/01\/09\/army-to-field-israeli-made-long-range-missile-on-helicopters\/\" target=\"_blank\">non-line-of-sight precision-guided weapon<\/a>, which has a 30-kilometer (18.6-mile) range, to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/land\/2021\/01\/29\/us-army-looks-at-israeli-precision-munition-for-infantry-squads\/\" target=\"_blank\">shoulder-fired short-range missile<\/a>, which has a 2-kilometer (1.2-mile) range. The U.S. Army recently evaluated the latter, and the former has already been fielded on its helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Aerospike is based on the Spike LR II, which has a ground-launched range of 5.5 kilometers and an air-launched range of 10 kilometers. Papier said the missile weighs 14 kilograms (30.9 pounds), and that it features a seeker and warhead similar to the Spike variety, although the weapon is more suited for air-to-ground launches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A company statement said the Aerospike can operate in a \u201ccontested environment and without GPS dependency.\u201d It includes scene-matching technology and \u201cdetection and tracking capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA real-time data link allows for seamless man-in-the-loop operation and advanced lethality with a combination of HEAT (antitank) and blast fragmentation warheads,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Papier noted the company is targeting the close-air support market and has seen interest from the armed C-130 aircraft community. Papier said the missile is already in use by customers, but would not identify any. The practice of not naming customers is common for Israeli defense sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/News\/Article-Display\/Article\/132937\/the-ac-130u-gunship-program-explores-viper-strike-capability\/\" target=\"_blank\">Viper Strike bombs<\/a> as well as Griffin and Hellfire missiles have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2021\/10\/11\/lockheed-delivers-laser-for-ac-130j-gunship\/\" target=\"_blank\">armed C-130s<\/a> before, but Papier said the Aerospike stands out among those weapons because of its standoff and passive capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rafael plans to market the Aerospike to existing Spike users, who are meeting in Latvia this year, Papier said.
